Publisher's summary

Relic, a Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child thriller that introduces FBI Special Agent Pendergast

Just days before a massive exhibition opens at the popular New York Museum of Natural History, visitors are being savagely murdered in the museum's dark hallways and secret rooms. Autopsies indicate that the killer cannot be human....

But the museum's directors plan to go ahead with a big bash to celebrate the new exhibition, in spite of the murders.

Museum researcher Margo Green must find out who - or what - is doing the killing. But can she do it in time to stop the massacre?

Prolong the suspense: listen to the sequel, Reliquary.

Critic reviews

"With its close-up view of museum life and politics, plausible scientific background, sharply drawn characters and a plot line that's blissfully free of gratuitous romance, this well-crafted novel offers first-rate thrills and chills." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Wildly cool....Thrill hounds couldn't ask for a creepier environment....a thriller staged in the world's scariest building, with no room for the squeamish." ( Kirkus Reviews)

A great listen!

I bought this hoping for a good story I could listen to whilst at the gym and enjoyed it so much I found myself listening every chance I had.

It was odd to come across a book where I couldn't care less about any of the characters, yet I just had to keep listening. It's a clever story which saves a few good surprises for the end.

Nicely narrated although one or two of the characters' "voices" irritated slightly. Still, who cares? It is a ripping yarn and I enjoyed it immensely.

Great book, but didn't love the narrator.

Narrator did a good job, but I didn't like his choices doing some voices.
He was obviously comfortable with NY accents, but he really struggled with the Scot accent and the accent of a native Southerner from New Orleans. Those accents became inconsistent caricatures.
Preferred the narrator from Thunderhead.

Good, but sound effects were cheesy.

It was a good story. The sound effects for walkie talkie and echo dialogue were awful. Other than that it was very interesting concept.

Great story....interesting way to start the series

What did you love best about Relic?

I enjoyed the buildup of this book. Having read several other Pendergast novels, this one def measures up. Its a good origin story.

What did you like best about this story?

The best part for me would be the beginning interaction of the main characters and see how it all began.

Have you listened to any of David Colacci’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any other David Colacci performances but this was well read and pleasurable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I def wanted to listen in one sitting, I ended up listening to this solely while to and from work and at work. I had to finish it!

It was like listening to an old radio show, great storytelling. From the story itself, to the performance, it keeps you rapured.

Try the 2nd book as well.

What made the experience of listening to Relic the most enjoyable?

The movie wasn't bad. Was surprised to see the huge differences in the 2 stories.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. I just love a good creature feature.

Which scene was your favorite?

The assault on the museum.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Now with pentagrast! Not sure why you would not keep the main character?

Stunning!

Where does Relic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have read a lot of audiobooks so this book would be in my top 10.

What other book might you compare Relic to and why?

Other Preston Child books. The endings are always a surprise and the stories or parts of them will continue in other books. You will meet these characters again and perhaps they aren't the people you thought they were!

Have you listened to any of David Colacci’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. His performances are outstanding. I love his voice and intonation. The voice literally creates the most detailed story pictures in the readers mind. Brilliant!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Mysteries of science.

Any additional comments?

Talented writers, amazing stories.

A fiercely gripping story

This book is horrifyingly gripping, and it never seems to let you go. Even during the calm parts of the book, I was always on edge waiting for something terrible to happen.
A superb storyline. I have not enjoyed a book this much in a long time.
The narration is excellent and adds a great feeling of atmosphere to the book.
