Publisher's summary

Raised in post-Revolution Granville, Massachusetts, James Gould could only imagine the beauty and warmth of the lands to the south. It was there that he longed to build bridges and lighthouses from his very own designs and plans. His gripping story unfolds as Gould follows his dream to the raw settlement of Bangor on the Penobscot River, St. Simons Island off the coast of Georgia, lawless Spanish East Florida, and back - at last and finally - to St. Simons. Along the way, he encounters hardship, peril, failure, and success, but it is the unwavering love of Janie Harris, an especially beautiful and strong-willed young woman, that fulfills his deep need for someone who can share the dream and the life he has chosen.

Origin of the Saint Simons Island Lighthouse

Learn about the origin of the Saint Simons Island Lighthouse. Much of the island’s history and people we now know as neighborhoods and streets come alive in this book.

Excellent Historical Novel!

The St Simon's Trilogy was required reading in one of my highschool English classes. I loved it then & thoroughly enjoyed listening to book 1 now. Of course. it is interesting to research the real James Gould and to note that Eugenia Price generally constructs her stories around historical facts! Can't wait to continue the trilogy.

Authentic historical facts and figures wrapped into a novel that brings them all to life.

When I read Eugenia Price's books in hardcopy, there were multiple pages notating all the true historical figures, facts and events that were wrapped up in this novel. One of the most authentic historical novels or sets of novels that I have ever read. Unfortunately I suppose it would be boring for the narrator to list all these historical facts that make the story so rich and deeply moving, knowing that the majority of all these people and events were actual and true historical fact.

A trip thru Georgia History

I loved hearing about all the Georgia History and James Gould migration to our great state. I did speed up the voice a bit and it read better.

Local history come to life!

As an islander, I love this book. It has such a different meaning living here on the island. Ginny have St Simons a great story based on real people and real places and real events. Her grave is not more then 200 yards from my house. It offers a face to family members that are mentioned in the book. This is a novel based on historical facts. A great read. And you can still come to St Simons to see the locations written about.

Terrible narration

I had read the book in high school and remembered enjoying it. It was indeed, enjoyable. The narration however was appalling!!!! Almost couldn’t finish it.

Slavery bullshit

I can’t stand the way slavery is romanticized. Complete bullshit and cowardly rewriting of our history.
Price is a talented writer and it’s disappointing that this one glaring issue prevented my finishing the book.
