Publisher's summary

“A chilling novel showcasing Claire Douglas's trademark brilliantly claustrophobic settings and tightly plotted twists. Impossible to know which of the well-drawn characters to trust and very hard to put down.”—Gilly MacMillan, bestselling author of What She Knew

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Do Not Disturb, an electrifying tale of psychological suspense in which an unsuspecting young woman finds herself trapped in an increasingly sinister web of mystery and lies.

  • CARER/COMPANION WANTED FOR ELDERLY LADY

She thought she was safe. So did the others . . .

At loose ends after the devastating death of her mother, Una Richardson responds to an advertisement for a ladies’ companion, a position that leads her into the wealthy, secluded world of Mrs. Elspeth McKenzie.

But Elspeth's home isn’t the comforting haven it seems.

Kathryn, her cold and bitter daughter, resents Una's presence. More disturbing is evidence suggesting two girls lived here before her.

What happened to the young women?

Why won’t the McKenzies talk about them?

What are they hiding?

As the walls begin to close in around her, Una fears she'll end up just like the other girls . . .

Yawn. Barely a 3

I actually love over the top and unrealistic twists. I guess I enjoy suspending belief while reading. This was just long, drawn out then tied up with a pretty bow, kinda a weird dumb bow. Actor was amazing though, wonderfully adaptable and a joy to listen to. On to the next, hopefully better book!

Good Book overall

Really farfetched, but still fun to listen to. Not super thrilling, but kept me listening and interested. Good buy on sale.

Soooo Good!

Enjoyed! At first I was a little bored… but it didn’t take long to take off. Then kept going with mystery.
Rich older woman hires a companion in a grand house. Once the young companion settles in … she begins questioning peculiar coincidences that are so unsettling she begins to snoop on her own.

Good twists

I enjoyed this mystery. There are some good twists. Just an easy to listen to mystery that surprised me at the end.

Worth a Credit

Firstly, I have never read anything by this author. I kind of stumbled upon this book while searching for something in the mystery genre to listen to.
This was really good! I thought I had it all figured out about halfway through the book ( I thought I was so clever) and boy was I wrong. Five stars!

Excellent performance, great story line

Truly enjoyed this. Although the ending gets a little messy in my opinion. While most questions were answered in the end, I felt like I was still clinging to certain questions and couldn’t focus on the questions being answered currently but that is probably a me problem- not the authors! Great story line. Definitely kept me intrigued. 100% recommend

Enjoyable but too long

I enjoyed the book, but I was ready for it to be over about 2 hours before it was. Took too long to unwind.

Just what happened to the “Other Girls”?

Author Claire Douglas and narrator Georgia Maguire combine their skills to create a brilliant psychological thriller. Going back and from from childhood to now with several characters, this unique British tale is an audictive listen. Never a dull moment, it is filled with devious suspicions, a rollercoaster ride with twists and turns and surprises throughout. It is indeed a complex audiobook with a favorite writing style of mine: A complicated and entangled cast of characters that includes a compelling finale that is perfectly wrapped up with a big red bow {{{floor, please meet jaw}}}. Take my word for it, you won’t want to miss anything. Well worth my treasured credit. Highly recommended. I’ll be looking for more by these two creative women. Yeah, I’m back on that damned roof screaming, Epic, I say! EPIC! EPIC! EPIC!

Very enjoyable

Enjoyed it a lot and did not figure out the twists before they were revealed! The narrator was good but there were pieces edited in that kind of pulled me out of the story but that was not a dealbreaker :)

I liked everything about this from the narration to the storyline to the twists and turns

The story was complex but not hard to follow. It was full of twists... sympathetic relatable characters, is was everything I love in a book
