Publisher's summary

Sometimes, trust can get you killed.

Deep Del Toro, an Iniquus special operative on the Strike Force Team, listened to the radio as the announcer gave details of Lacey Stuart's upcoming press conference. He had watched video of her fighting off the FBI agent and escaping from a murder scene the night before, and now she was turning herself over to the police. What Deep's practiced eye saw in the video was a highly choreographed crime. But somehow Lacey had thwarted the professionals' plans. She was in imminent danger.

When Deep saves Lacey from a sniper's bullet at the press conference, he becomes enmeshed in a mystery that includes the FBI, the CIA, and a tangle of interconnected international crimes.

Deep and Lacey work as a team to discover who plays the good guy and who plays the bad guy in a gray world where right and wrong easily overlap.

captivating

couldn't see until well into the story how things may play out. Mr Duran did a spectacular job, my current favorite narrator. only complaint is (spoilers!) the scene with the vehicle falling off the ledge - really? keep it from falling off with a rope tied around a tree? ugh.
still loved the book

Douglas Sabattis

I liked the story. The development of the love story. And characters. I don't like what Steve did but I think he really loved her. But still he did help in Danica death. Sadly he let everyone lead him. Causing Lacey to have put in danger.

Weak girl meets alpha male

Girl falls apart often and always at the most inopportune moments. Repeatedly avoids both gathering all information and/or absorbing information before making life or death choices. Also repeatedly handicaps other's decision making by failing to fully divulge information. Alpha male endlessly saves her. And somehow he falls in love? They both need a therapist!

My New Favorite Author

I am new to Fiona Quinn, and an immediate fan.

If you like well written stories, with a great storyline, great suspense, romance, and quality character development- this book is for you.

The pace of the book was perfect and I could not stop listening. I am about to go binge her other books.

Troy Duran was his usual phenomenal self. It was great to hear him play an emotionally robust role.

This book is worth the investment.

If you’ve read other Fiona Quinn, maybe?

I was disappointed in this book. Didn’t end up finishing it. First, I felt like I had come in mid-story. Audible recommended this to me as a start of a new series, but I felt as I had missed a lot.

Before we start this story, our male lead, Deep, is already committed to Lacy - from only meeting her & a touch. What the wha? Why is he drawn to her? And Lacy feels similarly, but because she has some difficulties, doesn’t pursue Deep. Even after she calls on him for help, she holds back. Honestly, she seems pretty wimpy and not worth (what I assume is a great guy - we don’t really know from THIS book) Deep.

So this entire story is about pulling information out of Lacy and putting that together with what Deep uncovers. It’s so slow & tedious. Also, an FBI agent, Steve, is in the mix who also has it bad for Lacy (why???). After she disappears, we get too many scenes of Steve hand wringing about Lacy without moving the story forward.

On the romantic side. There is no sizzle or apparent draw between Deep & Lacy, we’re just TOLD they each think the other is “it.” Also, they’re having sex, but there’s no heat surrounding them at all. Some may be due to the narrator, I’m not sure. He seems okay, but there’s no real emotion, ever.

Anyway, if you’re a Fiona Quinn fan & have read more of her previous series, and know these characters already, you may enjoy this. If you want character development, a decent pace, an engaging heroine, and a romance that makes sense, this isn’t going to do it.
