Publisher's summary

Swift. Silent. Deadly. Hunted.

Recon Marine Conor McCall didn’t expect action during his training op in the icy waters off Norway. But when a bizarre summer fog engulfed his boat, he and his team found themselves in a pitched fight against strange, cruel monsters emerging from the coastal depths of the North Sea. That was just the beginning.

Stranded in a barren land of mountains, glaciers, and black pines, far from home and unable to contact the world they came from, the marines must prepare for war against murderous barbarians, wicked sorcerers, and foul creatures summoned from the oldest, deepest, and darkest pits of hell. When even their allies are enemies, the Recon Marines must do what they have always done: adapt or die. But with a world of ice and monsters seeking to destroy them, every second is mission-critical.

US Marine Veteran Peter Nealen delivers a thrilling, action-packed WarGate adventure that blends the world-building of Eaters of the Dead with the gritty combat and real-life tactics of Forgotten Ruin.

An interesting introduction to The Lost universe.

I did not know I needed military/fantasy in my life. Military tactics and monsters should not really be two things that can make a cohesive story, but Ice and Monsters gets it done. It starts with a kick in the shorts in chapter one and it doesn't let up. My only real criticism was it was so fast paced that it was difficult to get to know some of the characters. I look forward to the next installment, maybe I will get my questions about our heroes answered.
Mark Boyett does a fantastic job narrating as usual and I look forward to more titles thay he has narrated.
I also appreciate the AAR at the end of the books as a feature from wargate. It is nice getting to know the writers perspective and learning more about them.

Non-Stop Action

grim and gritty military/fantasy mashup. The book starts off with a bizarre fire fight with fishmen (shades of Lovecraft's Deep Ones) and doesn't let up.

It's a fun and fast-paced listen. I had to take a break from it one or twice because the action was both intense and non-stop in some passages.

Love The Mix of Fantasy and Modern Military

I think that this is a difficult mix of genres to write in and do well. I have really enjoyed the "Forgotten Ruin" series by Anspach and Cole about a Ranger battalion that transported forward in time. I think it's the first book series that has accomplished this mix well. Saying all of this, I'm not sure that Nealen didn't do a better job with this book. The characters are very well-written and interesting in their mix of personalities. If you've been active military, you can tell that Nealen has also, simply through the characters he's written.

The story kept me engaged the entire time and I cannot wait until I pick up the next books in the series, and to support a great story, Boyett does his normal, fantastic job of bringing the story to life. I say this is a total win and recommend them highly.

The absolute best in military fantasy!

if you wanted the answer to the question, ''What would happen if a modern day group of soldiers were put up against a medieval army?' then this is the book for you! in this story a platoon of Recon Marines teleports to a fantasy styled dimension. Written by a former Reconnaissance Marine, this book is jam packed with realistic tactics, terminology, and violence....so much violence! The excellent writing paired with perfect baritone narration brings chills, raises the hackles, and tears out the heartstrings. If you're looking for a badass military Isekai then this is it my friends! Buy this audiobook!

Buckle Up

Buckle up it’s a ride from start to finish and is with the credit. Wargate Books has started something and you need to hop aboard the train because it’s going to runaway with everything soon.

Excellent

You need to strap in and enjoy the ride. This is yet another reason Galaxy’s Edge/War Gate is the leader of the military sci-fi/fantasy genre.

Could have been better!

Book could have been better. Narrator was excellent but all the sorcery or magic in the story didn't make the plot good. To me, it's a little strange. I would prefer it with just monsters. This is just my personal preference.

All around good book.

Well balanced between syfy and modern military tactics mixed with Journey to the center of an unknown world.
