Publisher's summary

Intrepid hero Cork O'Connor faces the most harrowing mission of his life when a charter plane carrying his wife, Jo, goes missing in a snowstorm over the Wyoming Rockies. Months after the tragedy, two women show up on Cork's doorstep with evidence that the pilot of Jo's plane was not the man he claimed to be. It may not be definitive proof, but it's a ray of light in the darkness.

Agreeing to investigate, Cork travels to Wyoming, where he battles the interference of local law enforcement who may be on the take, the open hostility of the Northern Arapaho, who have much to lose if the truth is known, and the continuing attempts on his life by assassins who shadow his every move. At the center of all the danger and deception lies the possibility that Jo's disappearance was not the end of her, that somewhere along the labyrinthine path of his search, maybe even in the broad shadow of Heaven's Keep itself, Cork will find her alive and waiting for him.

Another amazing story

Great characters. All human. Not all good people, but story line continues to unwind until the very end.

Krueger is a master at raw emotion

I love this series, but this one in particular draws you in. Krueger is a master at translating raw emotion through his writing.

Always an adventure.

I love this series of books. This one takes a different twist. Cork continues to have hear and justice. The narrator does pause in some spots but I love his voice and he is synonymous with Cork to me.

Cork Follows His Heart

I liked that this was as much an emotional struggle for Cork as it was an another mystery to solve. Krueger wrote a mature well rounded
novel - suspenseful to the end.

Perhaps the best of Cork O'Connor

listened to Ordinary Grace before returning to the world of Cork O'Connor and thought it might be a step down...pleased to share that this was the best of Cork's stories to date.

One of the best in the Cork I’Connor Series

The author did a great job of walking the reader through all of the twists and turns of the story to arrive at the inevitable conclusion. A real cliff hanger most of the way throughout the story. Excellent read!

Applaud the New Perspective

I have continued to listen to this series in order, occasionally, perhaps one or two books a year. The author has created something significant and with this latest version takes a big chance on breaking with his traditional north-woods storytelling. I, for one, applaud the effort and the change of pace. Some familiar characters are present, but from the outset this is a different story in the telling. Marvelous, thought provoking and filled with the courage of trying something new. I was rewarded with a story rich in detail and one that broke new ground. Makes me curious for what lies ahead. A lawman who wrestles with the killing power of guns – not only is that an entirely plausible (perhaps natural) condition, it would be plastic and entirely unrealistic for the storyteller not to include this as a natural part of Cork’s progression given what he has endured. These characters are not pieces of paper, William Kent Krueger has made them real. For those of us who cherish our Bill of Rights (guns, speech and otherwise), it is necessary to understand and explore these contradictions. Bravo – and well done yet again.
