Publisher's summary

A provocative look at how eliminating wheat from our diets can help us lose weight, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse a broad spectrum of health problems—from acne to diabetes to serious digestive disorders.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than 2,000 of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat. How this once-benign grain—now genetically modified almost beyond recognition and found in virtually every course of every meal—has come to have such a profound and deleterious effect on our collective well-being is one of the great untold health stories of our generation.

In Wheat Belly, Dr. Davis exposes the truth about modern-day wheat, deconstructing its historical role in the human diet and the agricultural evolutions that have created a hybrid grain that has a greater impact on blood sugar levels than pure cane sugar and many of the addictive characteristics of a narcotic. He sheds light on wheat’s connection to weight gain as well as to a host of other adverse effects from diabetes to heart disease to immunologic and neurologic disorders like celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia. Finally, to help listeners dependent on wheat products make the move to a wheat-free diet, he presents a clear-cut action plan packed with food and lifestyle tips, meal plans, and recipes.

Informed by decades of clinical research and backed by case studies of men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in their health after waving good-bye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at a familiar food as well as an affirmative life plan for regaining health and losing unwanted pounds.

Lose the fat and gain alertness

Highly recommended! I've listened to Perlmuter's "Brain Grain" and Taubes' "Why We Get Fat" - both excellent but I rate this one slightly better. Informative, entertaining and potentially life changing. Davis does a great job reviewing the basics. He certainly does not like wheat and after listening, you may not either. I've lost that afternoon fatigue and thank wheat elimination.

Thought Provoking

The author lays out a compelling case against wheat. But from my perspective, the bigger takeaway is to eat minimally processed foods.

Critical information, superb delivery

What did you love best about Wheat Belly?

Shocking information on a food staple we have been and continue to be told to trust and consumer more of. Shocking information on the myriad of health health complications linked to wheat. Because of the prevalence of wheat in nearly every packaged good and in the majority of the world's diet, it is of stupendous importance that everyone gives this book a listen, if not just to hear a different perspective on common wheat that we were taught to trust. And this book is not just doom and gloom -- it also provides the equally shocking simple and easy way to counter the effects of wheat-- give it up, and replace it with delicious, whole foods! Give this book a chance-- it could change your life-- and believe it or not, due to wheat's potential devastating effects, save it.

A bit fanatic for my taste

I have long known that wheat and especially white wheat and pastries is nothing for me. As good it may taste, I usually feel the negative effects soon afterwards: I become Irritated, sluggish and sleepy.

But dr. Davis' book is simply not very good, he takes a rather fanatical approach blaming wheat for everything from teenagers acne and overweight to diabetes and death. Some of it is probably true but he fails to refer to any studies, it's mostly experiences from his clinic.

The book is also quite repetitive and full of dry lists.

But the narration is good.

For a more interesting book on a similar subject I would recommend the book “Gut and Psychology Syndrome” by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride

Very Insightful and Informative

What made the experience of listening to Wheat Belly the most enjoyable?

Very informative. He gives info of the development of wheat and it's historical changes, how it effects the diet and all the body systems it effects. He has worked with many folks with varied diseases and suggests they change their diet to exclude wheat and in a short time changes the expression of that disease process in their body! Not at all dull and boring but from the perspective of health and healing veeeeerrrrrrrrryyyyyy goooooooooodddddddd info

What other book might you compare Wheat Belly to and why?

As insightful and informative as Potateos not Prozac

Entertaining and Informative

Informative and historically fascinating to learn about the genesis and development of wheat into our society. Scary to know about the medical side effects, and a bit draconian, at times, are the dietary suggestions given by the author. Overall, better informed than to stay uninformed of how pervasive wheat is in our diets.

Mostly relevant but misses some key points

Dr. Davis' warnings about carbohydrate rich foods for people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome focused too heavily on wheat, to the point where other sources of carbohydrates such as corn and legumes were hardly mentioned. It felt similar to a warning that people should always wear their seatbelts while driving or riding in a sedan and then waiting until the end to include a footnote saying that you should also wear a seatbelt while driving or riding in a pickup truck, when instead the message could be much more clearly stated as you should always wear your seatbelt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle.
