Publisher's summary

A provocative look at how eliminating wheat from our diets can help us lose weight, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse a broad spectrum of health problems—from acne to diabetes to serious digestive disorders.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than 2,000 of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat. How this once-benign grain—now genetically modified almost beyond recognition and found in virtually every course of every meal—has come to have such a profound and deleterious effect on our collective well-being is one of the great untold health stories of our generation.

In Wheat Belly, Dr. Davis exposes the truth about modern-day wheat, deconstructing its historical role in the human diet and the agricultural evolutions that have created a hybrid grain that has a greater impact on blood sugar levels than pure cane sugar and many of the addictive characteristics of a narcotic. He sheds light on wheat’s connection to weight gain as well as to a host of other adverse effects from diabetes to heart disease to immunologic and neurologic disorders like celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia. Finally, to help listeners dependent on wheat products make the move to a wheat-free diet, he presents a clear-cut action plan packed with food and lifestyle tips, meal plans, and recipes.

Informed by decades of clinical research and backed by case studies of men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in their health after waving good-bye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at a familiar food as well as an affirmative life plan for regaining health and losing unwanted pounds.

At first...

When I first starting listening to this book (which was highly recommend from trusted sources) I didn't like the narrator. He sounded dull, boring, uninterested. I really wanted to know what this book was about however, and persisted on. After a little while the narrator's voice no longer bothered me and I started to think that although he sounds like a computer it actually fits. Not that this book is dull and boring, on the contrary I found it very educational and interesting. Here we're parts that seemed a little over the lay-person's head. But overall I appreciate the research and since starting this listening, have embarked on a wheat-free lifestyle and am really liking how I am feeling.

Any additional comments?

This book blew my mind. Though I am not overweight or suffering from celiac disease or any other ailment[s], I will never ever again eat wheat. Goodbye wheat. I swear that, because of this audiobook, I will go to my grave gluten free.

Life Saving

Would you listen to Wheat Belly again? Why?

This book is so enlightening regarding why the current obesity rate in this country is out of control. It is sad how diabetes and its complications are killing us and very few people in the know are really speaking out and alerting us as to what we can do to save ourselves!! It is tragic the greed of large corporations with genetically engineered food and the impact that has own our lives. When I became an RN in 1982, diabetes was not that common, now it seems like a rite of passage to adulthood when it shouldn't be.
Thank you Dr. Davis for sounding the alarm!!

What other book might you compare Wheat Belly to and why?

The Paleo Answer, Why We Get Fat, and The Primal Blueprint

What does Tom Weiner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It is easier to multi-task while listening. It is like a 3-D experience!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Know the Truth and Live!

Any additional comments?

Everyone should read this book! Excellent!

I would spend pages and pages to describe this book, but let's try to simplify.
As soon as I started listening to this book, I was so terrified by the things wheat can do to your body, that halfway through the book I decided to divorce from wheat. In 5 days I lost 2 kilos, aprox. 4 pounds, I feel better, and my tummy looks smaller.

I do not have celiac disease, but I decided to give this book's strategy a try, since I have been eating well, but still gaining weight. I completely removed wheat from my diet. My hunger diminished. I also changed the content in my pantry, since many processed foods have gluten disguised in them.
Wheat makes you hungrier, grumpier and makes your thoughts foggier, among so many other things.

Everyone should read this book!
How many of us have been on diets prescribed by doctors and have not gotten the expected result, since you have been following every little detail on that specific diet? Well, this book provides many answers, actually more answers than what you expect.
I have no reason to doubt what dr. William says since I have been trying these teachings and have been feeling so much better. Only 6 days to feel the difference ( this was how long it took me to listen to this book ). Imagine what it can do to your whole life ahead of you.

The information contained in this book should be read over and over. Happy listening / reading!

Clear case that wheat is bad for your diet

I did it this week.... I removed all wheat from my diet. I haven't really missed it. The key thing for me is that carbs (especially wheat based carbs) increase blood sugar more than white sugar does. This drives insulin production which causes more of these calories to be converted into fat.
