Publisher's summary

A provocative look at how eliminating wheat from our diets can help us lose weight, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse a broad spectrum of health problems—from acne to diabetes to serious digestive disorders.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than 2,000 of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat. How this once-benign grain—now genetically modified almost beyond recognition and found in virtually every course of every meal—has come to have such a profound and deleterious effect on our collective well-being is one of the great untold health stories of our generation.

In Wheat Belly, Dr. Davis exposes the truth about modern-day wheat, deconstructing its historical role in the human diet and the agricultural evolutions that have created a hybrid grain that has a greater impact on blood sugar levels than pure cane sugar and many of the addictive characteristics of a narcotic. He sheds light on wheat’s connection to weight gain as well as to a host of other adverse effects from diabetes to heart disease to immunologic and neurologic disorders like celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia. Finally, to help listeners dependent on wheat products make the move to a wheat-free diet, he presents a clear-cut action plan packed with food and lifestyle tips, meal plans, and recipes.

Informed by decades of clinical research and backed by case studies of men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in their health after waving good-bye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at a familiar food as well as an affirmative life plan for regaining health and losing unwanted pounds.

Good for a newbie

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Maybe. I would recommend this book for someone who doesn't know a lot about healing through nutrition. They will learn some things. For someone who has been working on "cleaning up" their diet, I would not recommend this book. They will learn more about the dangers of wheat consumption, but not much else.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The last hour of the book was somewhat helpful. It was, however, written from an anti-wheat perspective and did not take into account many other concerns such as vegan/vegetarianism or glutamate sensitivities. The entire book was written, I think, in an irreverent tone in an attempt to entertain. I did not enjoy it. I did not think it was funny and found it offensive in many places. The first 6.5 hours were informative, but also contained a lot of repetition which I found kind of a waste of time.

What does Tom Weiner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nice pace and rhythm.

Thorough Research

Davis writes from a medical-journalist perspective, providing tons of research to back up his ideas. He is credible and convincing. Realizing that genetically-modified wheat has replaced "real" wheat in our food without any testing on humans surprised and alarmed me. Great book.

Shocking Truth backed up with Facts to Prove It

Very compelling. Don't know if I could have read this one page by page because of the details of the science behind it all. Thankful for audio and ability to listen at 2X speed which made it all extremely captivating and compelling so much as to start living life without wheat so I could see what the outcome it has on myself and loved ones.
If you want the most no nonsense, no BS read on the subject of wheat and gluten and all the facts to back up every word of every chapter then get this book.

After devouring it in 2 days of driving 4 hours each day I really don???t think this is another fade diet, rather a real epidemic that has real long term health effects on us wheat eaters. Luckily no one in our immediate family has the dramatic effects but instantly recognized issues that coworkers and friends and friends kids may have that could very well be caused by eating wheat with every meal every day. Please understand that I am not a tree hugging vegan loving, won't wear anything but hemp type at all. Just a road warrior business traveler who wants to find a way to live longer and enjoy good health longer than what I see going on around me.
Hope this book can give you the same benefits as I am noticing only 1 week into the wheat free diet.
