Publisher's summary

A provocative look at how eliminating wheat from our diets can help us lose weight, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse a broad spectrum of health problems—from acne to diabetes to serious digestive disorders.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than 2,000 of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat. How this once-benign grain—now genetically modified almost beyond recognition and found in virtually every course of every meal—has come to have such a profound and deleterious effect on our collective well-being is one of the great untold health stories of our generation.

In Wheat Belly, Dr. Davis exposes the truth about modern-day wheat, deconstructing its historical role in the human diet and the agricultural evolutions that have created a hybrid grain that has a greater impact on blood sugar levels than pure cane sugar and many of the addictive characteristics of a narcotic. He sheds light on wheat’s connection to weight gain as well as to a host of other adverse effects from diabetes to heart disease to immunologic and neurologic disorders like celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia. Finally, to help listeners dependent on wheat products make the move to a wheat-free diet, he presents a clear-cut action plan packed with food and lifestyle tips, meal plans, and recipes.

Informed by decades of clinical research and backed by case studies of men and women who have experienced life-changing transformations in their health after waving good-bye to wheat, Wheat Belly is an illuminating look at a familiar food as well as an affirmative life plan for regaining health and losing unwanted pounds.

I highly recommend this book

This book Changed my whole view on dieting and health! I can now see the link between the times I unknowingly cut wheat during low carb dieting and the weightloss that resulted!

Changed & possibly saved my life!

What made the experience of listening to Wheat Belly the most enjoyable?

Written in a fun voice. Gives you the ability to enjoy and even laugh in the process of learning the technical realities of how we are poisoning ourselves as a culture. It also gives great hope that the cure is as simple as... stop poisoning ourselves.

What other book might you compare Wheat Belly to and why?

The perfect trifecta in my opinion would be... Wheat Belly, Eat Right 4 Your Type & Atkins. In that order. The knowledge and understanding of how what we choose to put or not put in our mouth can change your life!!!

What about Tom Weiner’s performance did you like?

Very fun playful voice. Kept me smiling even when I knew I was going to have to change my life and make some difficult decisions about what not to eat.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed on many occasions.

Thoroughly convincing

Would you try another book from William Davis and/or Tom Weiner?

Maybe, depending on the topic and length of time to listen and value that goes with it.

Would you be willing to try another book from William Davis? Why or why not?

Maybe, depending on topic relevant tomy health concern.

What three words best describe Tom Weiner’s performance?

Listening tone monotonous sometimes. too fast in citing examples, some words/examples not easily grasp by listener.

Do you think Wheat Belly needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. Discussion was too long already. Convincing enough to let us know of disadvantage of consuming wheat products.

Any additional comments?

Many examples of food are repetitoious. Should mention food items from other countries since listeners and marketing of the books is global. Some listeners are From Asian countries.

I think he has a point, several in fact!

OK, I was feeling a bit desperate to lose some weight. I did the recap of the
diabetes education on eating right for diabetics. and GAINED another 30 lbs in
the last 6 months. so fine I give up. Best friend used to say, why are you doing the same old thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Dr. Davis, at least is willing to try something different and the results, I took wheat containing foods off my plate. I like vegetables, all kinds of vegetbles, and in three weeks I have lost 14 lbs. I don't do any additional exercise. The best part is I am not hungry. OH yeah, my morning sugars are down 50 points, and I run normal blood sugars all day. I can't wait till my next visit to my PCP to get the new hbA1c results and see what those are like.

Solid information

I enjoyed this book and found far too many of my own symptoms listed in the problems of gluten.

Basically Low GI

This book was a great review of the harmful effects of wheat. If even a third of it is true, it’s worrying. But when it comes down to the diet, it’s basically just a low glycemic index (G.I.) diet (a.k.a. South Beach). The diet isn’t new, but the information about wheat is a helpful motivator.

Summarizes my 25 year health journey

I have been learning from my body for the last nearly 25 years and had I had this book then my journey would have been a lot simpler and with less pain. I now teach health and Wellness because of this journey- because of what I learned, and even wrote a book about Body-types and self-healing . I wholeheartedly recommend this book! It explains things well in plain English and science what is or may be happening in our environment and bodies. I appreciate that the author, a medical doctor, was willing to go outside of his conventional education and consider alternatives. I found the information very well-rounded and am eagerly sharing it with friends and clients! I especially like that the author emphasizes to eat gluten-free but this means to eat real foods not just those labeled "gluten-free" Yes!
