Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help people lose weight and improve health. But a key element in any successful nutritional health program is a tried-and-true method that most people haven't thought about - yet it could be revolutionary for taking health to the next level. This ancient secret is fasting.

Fasting is not about starving oneself. When done right, it's an incredibly effective therapeutic approach that produces amazing results regardless of diet plan. In fact, Toronto-based nephrologist Dr. Jason Fung has used a variety of fasting protocols with more than 1,000 patients, with fantastic success. In The Complete Guide to Fasting, he has teamed up with international best-selling author and veteran health podcaster Jimmy Moore to explain what fasting is really about, why it's so important, and how to fast in a way that improves health. Together, they make fasting as a therapeutic approach both practical and easy to understand.

The Complete Guide to Fasting explains:

  • Why fasting is actually good for health
  • Who can benefit from fasting (and who won't)
  • The history of fasting
  • The various ways to fast: intermittent, alternate-day, and extended fasting
  • What to expect when starting to fast
  • How to track progress while fasting
  • The weight loss effects of fasting
  • How to ward off potential negative effects from fasting

Loved it! As with Jimmy Moore's other books, this book provides practical advice for fasting/eating along side easy to understand explanations for the science behind how the body uses energy. The methods in this book are evidence-based and supported by years of medical research, unlike so many other dieting books. Definitely one of the best books on nutrition, preventative measures and lifestyle choices to put healthcare in the hands of patients rather than the pharmaceutical industry. Much needed information in today's age of diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome and the preponderance of unsubstantiated nutrition advice on the internet.

Must read for those interested in health/nutrition

This type of book is not meant to entertain but to guide folks like me out of years of yo-yo dieting. When methods failed to work I always blamed myself. Now I understand and can practice varying lengths of fasting in my everyday life. I’m thankful to be healthy even though I’m carrying around 75 extra lbs so I can make subtle changes without defending my actions. Stopped drinking diet sodas this week and use of artificial sweeteners is decreasing. This book will be my guide, so repeated listening to particular chapters is my plan. Thank you, Dr. Fung and Mr. Moore!

Many ‘Ah-Ha’ moments regarding diets of past 40 years

although I find fasting a very interesting and effective historical dietary mechanism that people have used either voluntarily or involuntarily in the past and present times, this book is seriously full of s***. Some of the things that this guy says are obviously untrue like for instance stating that people always listen to their doctors and quit smoking because their doctors tell them to so on and so forth. People rarely listen to their doctors especially when it comes to addictions. He also states that eat less move more does not work, yes it does. People don't listen to their doctors and they do choose not to eat less and move more. There's just so many things that he says in this book that are obvious correlations that he has made that are not facts. I have found myself laughing many times listening to this. I still think that fasting is a good and healthy mechanism to use, but some of the correlations in this book are just utter nonsense.

I’ve been trying this for awhile. I’m trying this way now. I’ll see how it goes. I’ve went 7 days before but gonna try to do a few short days instead of 7 straight.

So far so good.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with metabolic or weight problems, and anyone curious about fasting or intermittent fasting. Do you want to be healthy? This book is for you!

I had been curious for a while, and read/listened to several books and articles about fasting, but none of them were as comprehensive or sensible as this book. I don't have any serious health problems, but I'm in my mid-50s so they are lurking around every corner and ready to pounce. My biggest concern is obesity and all the problems it can bring on.

I put on a significant amount of weight during perimenopause and menooause, and tried several things to lose the excess weight including adjusting calories, macros, food types, meal sizes & timing among other things. I do CrossFit, ride a bike, and jog, so all the experts insisted I needed to eat more. Sure, that works for a lot of people, but not me. Turns out I needed a quick fast to reset and do some insulin correction, then a reduction in daily caloric intake. I took a week off from working out so my body could adjust, then went back to my normal fitness routine, but now I have two peices of low calorie, keto friendly toast and a little bit of fruit before working out. I haven't lost any speed or strength. In fact, I move a lot easier now that I've lost some weight! I will go for a jog or do other cardio while fasted, but I get some carbs before weightlifting. This book refers to a couole of power lifters and their fasting routines, so I'll check those out next. I've lost 20 lbs in the last 45 days and I feel great! My bloodwork from a few days ago shows everything not just within normal ranges, but at optimal levels.

I do intermittent fasting, and have cut my calories to what my body needs, not what the average (or young, physically fit & active) person needs. I am also eating more whole, natural foods. Yes, I was hungry the first couple of weeks, but that is subsiding. I sit at a desk all day long, so I don't need to eat a lot, especially since I still have a lot of stored fuel. I will adjust as I get to my goal weight/body fat percentage, but I am confident I can maintain a healthy weight now. I know what I need to do if I start puffing up again. I finally found what works for me!!!

I have a paper copy of this book, but never found the time to read it. I am so glad I checked Audible!!! I'm like a walking billboard for this book and audio book now!

Amazing!

Excellent answers to our modern eating problems and disease. I've been hearing some of these things in bits and pieces from other sources along with a few things I started to put together myself. This book brings it all together and confirms the theories.

Incredible Information

Great content. Didn’t have an issue with Mr. Moore’s delivery, as several others have stated having. I think he was trying to be clear and enunciate his words.

Very definitely worth purchasing.

Terrific

I have listened to it twice this month.

This book was well paced, well read and easy to understand. I had no idea about intermittent fasting and this book gave a very thorough explanation of what it is. Would definitely recommend.
