Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help people lose weight and improve health. But a key element in any successful nutritional health program is a tried-and-true method that most people haven't thought about - yet it could be revolutionary for taking health to the next level. This ancient secret is fasting.
Fasting is not about starving oneself. When done right, it's an incredibly effective therapeutic approach that produces amazing results regardless of diet plan. In fact, Toronto-based nephrologist Dr. Jason Fung has used a variety of fasting protocols with more than 1,000 patients, with fantastic success. In The Complete Guide to Fasting, he has teamed up with international best-selling author and veteran health podcaster Jimmy Moore to explain what fasting is really about, why it's so important, and how to fast in a way that improves health. Together, they make fasting as a therapeutic approach both practical and easy to understand.
The Complete Guide to Fasting explains:
- Why fasting is actually good for health
- Who can benefit from fasting (and who won't)
- The history of fasting
- The various ways to fast: intermittent, alternate-day, and extended fasting
- What to expect when starting to fast
- How to track progress while fasting
- The weight loss effects of fasting
- How to ward off potential negative effects from fasting

I had been curious for a while, and read/listened to several books and articles about fasting, but none of them were as comprehensive or sensible as this book. I don't have any serious health problems, but I'm in my mid-50s so they are lurking around every corner and ready to pounce. My biggest concern is obesity and all the problems it can bring on.
I put on a significant amount of weight during perimenopause and menooause, and tried several things to lose the excess weight including adjusting calories, macros, food types, meal sizes & timing among other things. I do CrossFit, ride a bike, and jog, so all the experts insisted I needed to eat more. Sure, that works for a lot of people, but not me. Turns out I needed a quick fast to reset and do some insulin correction, then a reduction in daily caloric intake. I took a week off from working out so my body could adjust, then went back to my normal fitness routine, but now I have two peices of low calorie, keto friendly toast and a little bit of fruit before working out. I haven't lost any speed or strength. In fact, I move a lot easier now that I've lost some weight! I will go for a jog or do other cardio while fasted, but I get some carbs before weightlifting. This book refers to a couole of power lifters and their fasting routines, so I'll check those out next. I've lost 20 lbs in the last 45 days and I feel great! My bloodwork from a few days ago shows everything not just within normal ranges, but at optimal levels.
I do intermittent fasting, and have cut my calories to what my body needs, not what the average (or young, physically fit & active) person needs. I am also eating more whole, natural foods. Yes, I was hungry the first couple of weeks, but that is subsiding. I sit at a desk all day long, so I don't need to eat a lot, especially since I still have a lot of stored fuel. I will adjust as I get to my goal weight/body fat percentage, but I am confident I can maintain a healthy weight now. I know what I need to do if I start puffing up again. I finally found what works for me!!!
I have a paper copy of this book, but never found the time to read it. I am so glad I checked Audible!!! I'm like a walking billboard for this book and audio book now!
