I like to read non-fiction, self-help, and especially books about health.
This book was not kooky and it did not lean too heavily on one culprit as being the cause of obesity. The author went back to the basics.
Diet books always have a hook. They'll focus on one thing like: insulin control, mind control, eliminating certain food groups, or eating at specific times.This book contends that there is no new "magic bullet" for weight loss. It is by far the most reasonable diet/exercise book that I've read. Venuto reiterates simple ideas that dieters already know, but need to hear again.
I have fallen for diet plans that say carbs, sugar, emotions, the hormones insulin, ghrelin, and leptin, or wheat products are the sole contributors to weight gain. Many of these books were written by doctors. Tom Venuto believes that all of these things are a piece of the puzzle, and he prescribes calorie restriction and challenging workouts as an antidote. It's not new, exciting news, but the reader will know immediately that this guy got it right.
Listen to this book while working out--a great motivator.

Realistic fitness lifestyle changes for anyone, any age any shape.
Tom backs up his publications with a fitness community website that has helped hundreds/thousands of people get in better shape. He personally takes the time to answer questions and gets involved with members on the online forums. He likes to give kudos to those who succeed. (There are fitness contests throughout the year). I hope he writes a book geared more for those who have to lose 100 lbs or more. He has some sound goal setting strategies, but it would help even more if there was a strategy set out especially for the most struggling crowd.
Read Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle and it was much better than this one. Would probably not read another one from Tom Venuto because of the preechy style in this book.

Useful information is only in two chapters. This could be a 1 hour listen instead of 10 hours.
This is truly a bodyfat solution! It not only addresses eating and exercise, but does a great job on entwining the psychological issues behind those bad habits that need to change and gives you the tools needed to do just that. All is broken down to a very comprehensive program to encourage a better lifestyle. This is NOT another diet book. This is a life guide!
This is a well rounded and practical approach to reducing body fat and and improving one's health. It is not gimmicky, and there is no quick fix or other fad diet nonsense. The nutrition plan is reasonable and suitable for the long term. Venuto also allows for human nature and the occasional deviation from the plan for special occasions and celebrations. The beginner workouts can be done by people of most fitness levels and there is a steady increase in difficulty as fitness improves. I found the narration to be very well done and professional. The overall tone of the book is motivating. I believe that following this plan can change one's life. I am 55 years old, fat and being treated for heart disease.In the past 4 weeks I've lost 12 lbs and 3% body fat. My strength and endurance are steadily improving as is my mood and attitude. This book may well be the best investment I've ever made.
I bought this book to listen to whilst driving and I will buy it again in hard copy, not because there is anything lacking in the audiobook (the PDF which comes with the audiobook is very comprehensive), more due to the fact that this is such a good health resource that I would like to come back and back. This is so much more comprehensive than most other fitness titles and I personally use this as the go-to resource despite owning and reading or listening to many titles in the same category. If you are ready for a change, don't miss this one! I am on my second listen and I rarely, rarely repeat.
Yes- I like the overall theme of the book, but the way the narrator pronounces some obvious words kind of makes me want to cringe. I don't know why!
This is a solid title with concepts rooted in science. Written in an engaging way and narrated competently. worth a listen for those concerned with health. The production value in this title is at the level I have come to expect in audible's offerings.
Stripping diet down to caloric intake without counting every calorie is refreshing. This is rarely seen but it is not entirely new. It’s no gimmick sales pitch is so far from the diet book norm that the concepts are hard to shake off.
The narrator is regular stock. Good performance but ultimately unmemorable. It is tough to be a stand out when delivering a non-fiction title that is purposely level headed.
there is nothing earth shattering in this title. no magic pills and life altering demands past a suggestion to get up and move a few minutes a day. I had no extreme reactions to the material delivered in this title but it did spark a lot of debate between supporters of ultra-focused fad dieters and the diet through balance crowd in our family. .
Read this book as a reminder to stay mindful or as a base building resource if you are a relative new comer to the world of moderation. Fad diets work fast, the catch is, they fall apart fast too. this book provides a sustainable outlook on food and fitness and if followed with mild effort, improvements in health and fitness will happen. By critically considering the concepts presented here, a person can develop the knowledge required to pick up healthy food and exercise habits while deflecting a continuous barrage of marketing hype and nutritional traps. Marketing related to weight is something almost all of us pay for. Whether it be buying a new piece of fitness gear on the TV, paying a bit more for the low fat version of an item, trading out fries for the side salad with a $1.50 charge, or tossing a bottle of questionable supplements with great graphics in the ad into the grocery cart. Spending your money on a book like this is an investment that is worth making. I would rather spend my money to get educated instead of paying for a shot in the dark fitness solution/fat-loss platform.
If you are reading this most likely you are somewhat educated in nutrition and exercising. Its a good book to keep around for motivation. Its also good because unlike some books it doesn't promise crazy results by some fad diet. I think people need to hear the truth from a professional trainer, and he does it very well!
Its hard to adjust. When you listen to the preview you hear Tom's voice and you are like OK. This guy sounds very passionate about the book. Then after you buy the book and listen to the intro you get the narrator, and he is awful.
The book itself is good. Lots of information that isn't new, but that is good to be reminded. What was disappointing is that there was no effort to make it anything other than a book that is read to you by someone else. Inappropriate for a book of this type. With a small amount of effort and a producer it could have been an audio book that you use over and over and it becomes motivation for your program. So get the book or get another audio that is billed as an enhancement to your workout program because this isn't it.
