Different narrator and the 3rd edition rather than 2nd.
Disappointed. I discovered this is an older edition. Plus the narrators style is very irritating to me.
I really like the point of being aware of one's stomach and only eating if you are hungry. How about if you really need to:
deal with emotional eating?
Read it themselves. That female reader was too sing songy.

When I found myself binging while dieting, I felt like I was living hell on earth. I became food obsessed and I feared binging or being near food because I was so emotionally affected by it. Thanks to the principles in this books I have being able to recover in less than a month. I also read the bought the audio book "a thin's woman brain" , and "read brain over binge". I can finally say that I have started to fully live, and I enjoy food and life without feeling deprived anymore. Thank you for writing this book.
I bought both audio/kindle- the book offers the tables/reference materials and the audio is just easier for me to consume in total.
Just understanding the equation of: restricting --> deprivation --> grasping --> guilt -->restricting. Once you X out restricting OF ANY KIND - the whole equation goes poof! For me the last frontier was letting go of restricting. I had all these little hidden restrictions (telling myself I wasn't dieting) - you have to truly let go of them for this to work.
I felt like I was getting counseled directly by an expert. Someone who really understands the depths of this and someone with empathy.
No extreme reactions - the book is mellow.
Having read all of Geneen Roth's books and Have your Cake and Skinny Jeans too - this book fills in some of the gaps. Really helped cement the practices - and helped me to understand how to apply day to day - practical. Yes it repeats a lot - but when you're unwinding decades of dieting- repetition is good!!
No, I didn't finish it and just read the book.
I couldn't stand this narrator. I dislike it when the tone of voice implies that if you don't buy the theories you are stupid.
Interesting concepts, but can't recommend the audio.
This is a good book with valuable information. It's just one I struggled to follow in audiobook format.
Excellent book! I felt like she had a window into my personal struggles with food. Excited about my new journey toward intuitive eating.
I like the concepts but they will be hard for me to follow. Some points seem outdated. Whole grains are just not a necessary part of our diets. I think the book Eat the Yolks is more up my alley. I just started listening to the audiobook, but it focuses on nourishing your body with nutritious foods as opposed to dieting. I dont know that I can ever re-program my brain to view all foods as equal like the book suggests. The ideas of listening to your body regarding fullness and hunger instead of following weight watchers is very valuable, and I love the hunger/fullness scale.
This book does make some valid and useful points that I completely agree with:
1 - Our bodies were designed with the ability to eat when we are hungry and stop when we are full.
2 - Today we often ignore these messages and overeat - especially foods that are not good for us - causing unhealthy weight gain and a host of medical problems.
3 - Diets - calorie restriction, low-fat diets, low-carb diets - DON’T work.
4 - Ignoring our hunger signals results in food obsession and often binge eating later.
5 - Focusing on weight instead of health and nutrition is not helpful and actually can lead us to unhealthy behavior.
However, there are some very serious concerns with the recommendations made in this book. Some of them are downright irresponsible.
In an ideal world, where all of our food was natural and nutritious, we could eat what we wanted when we wanted and we would not incur unhealthy consequences as a result. In an ideal world, all food would nourish our bodies as God intended. We would be sensitive to the savory flavors of meats, eggs, and seafood, the variety of texture and flavor of vegetables, and the succulent sweetness of fruit. But we do not live in an ideal world.
In our world today, we are bombarded by marketing to buy and eat foods that are manufactured to meet the “bliss point” of the perfect combination of sweet, salt, and fat. There are many people whose full-time job is focused on making “foods” with the ultimate pleasure point to keep us eating them. When we continue to eat these foods, they drive us to eat more. But they do not feed our bodies with nutrition. The constant bombardment of unnatural foods disrupts our hormones which leads to cravings, mixed up hunger signals, low energy, digestive troubles, and eventually, disease.
So, sometimes in this modern day of industrialized food we have to put mind over matter and decide with our mind - not our cravings or feelings - how we should fuel our bodies. I don’t feel that it is good advice for adults - in today’s world where junk food is everywhere - to allow themselves to eat whatever they want, ignoring common sense, while proposing to them that it will make them healthier.
Furthermore, to advise parents of toddlers to serve desserts - even processed, manufactured, sugary desserts - right along with nutritious foods at the dinner table is irresponsible. Food companies spend several billion dollars a year marketing their foods to children alone. Allowing free and open access of these foods to our children is throwing them directly into the marketing traps of the food industry. Do you want to decide what foods and flavors your child develops a taste for? How their bodies are nourished? Or should we leave that up to Nestle, Coca Cola, and Kraft?
Don’t waste your time and money on this book. If you want a real, logical solution to the dilemmas we face in deciding what to eat in this modern world, check out It Starts with Food by Melissa Hartwig. She actually explains why we crave junk food and what to do about it. True food freedom is not all the donuts and french fries you can eat. Real food freedom is eating great-tasting food that nourishes your body, is satisfying, makes you more healthy, and allows you to feel your best.
