Another Great Listen!

The Lord John books, novellas, and short stories are my new obsession. His adventures have been a great way to get through the latest Droughtlander. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about this fascinating, complex, and not seen enough Outlander character. Lord John needs his own tv series (pay attention STARZ). Now, let’s talk about the narration. I would very likely pay to listen to Jeff Woodman read the dictionary as Lord John. He has a lovely, fluidly smooth voice, is masterful with accents, and the dramatic inflection with which he reads is very effective. That’s it. That’s the review.

A small plate of savories

Highly recommended as an appetizing complement to the Outlander series. These three stories fill in a wealth of details about Lord John Greys's life and character. I don't know how interesting I would find them as stand alone works, but they provide backstory for one of my favorite personalities in the Outlander series. Plus they contain lots of clues and context for the longer Lord John books.

As usual with Diana Gabaldon there is a wealth of historic detail and some sly humor, with the added twist of the mysteries to be solved. The style of the writing is quite different from that in the Outlander main series - like fine claret as opposed to scotch whiskey, perhaps? Both appeal to me.

That being said, the final story 'Hand of Devils' does feel like it could easily be twice as long and better for it; I wanted to know more about some of the characters who remained undeveloped. Still it does tie up some of the loose ends from Brotherhood of the Blade (and will make a lot more sense if you have read that book).

I find Jeff Woodman's nuanced reading delightful, he brings the varied cast of characters to life - particularly Grey and his loyal, long suffering valet Tom Byrd. I've listened to these more than once in the past year, and enjoyed picking up on things I missed the first time.

An Extra OUTLANDER Read

I didn't enjoy this near as much as all the primary Outlander books. Lacking the romantic element of Claire and Jamie just made it a bit boring for me but those interested in the historical elements and details will enjoy this.

The narration was done well.

Great collection

As always, I love the Diana Gabaldon universe! Woodman is a decent narrator, though he drops the accent from time to time & you can hear his American dialect. There are also a few editing errors with sentences repeated (but hopefully none lost?!).

decent story, recording errors

the novellas were decent reading but the 2nd novella, Lord John and the succubus, has a bunch of repeated lines in the audible recording.

I love this series more than is normal : )

The smaller works give good background and fills out the larger (insanely larger : ) story. When you really get addicted to this series- and you will- you don't want to leave this world so these works help you hold on a little longer. Say no to reality and stay in the prolific, phenomenal mind of Gabaldon!
