Publisher's summary

Heartfelt and irresistible — “a lovely, deeply moving story of loss and love and memory made real” (Diana Gabaldon, number one New York Times best-selling author) — this enchanting debut follows a woman who travels back in time to be reunited with the mother she lost when she was a child.

Every night, as Faye puts her daughters to bed, she thinks of her own mother, Jeanie, who died when Faye was eight. The pain of that loss has never left her, and that’s why she wants her own girls to know how very much they are loved by her — and always will be, whatever happens.

Then one day, Faye gets her heart’s desire when she’s whisked back into the past and is reunited not just with her mother but with her own younger self.

Jeanie doesn’t recognize grown-up Faye as her daughter, even though there is something eerily familiar about her. But the two women become close friends and share all kinds of secrets — except for the deepest secret of all, the secret of who Faye really is. Faye worries that telling the truth may prevent her from being able to return to the present day, to her dear husband and beloved daughters. Eventually she’ll have to choose between those she loved in the past and those she loves in the here and now, and that knowledge presents her with an impossible choice.

If only she didn’t have to make it....

Critic reviews

"In a British accent and friendly tone, narrator Sophie Roberts portrays Faye, who speaks directly to the listener as she chronicles her story of time travel. Faye is a happily married 30-something with two young daughters when a fall through an old box sends her back to the 1970s. There she meets her younger self and her mother, who died when she was 8 years old. Roberts's conversational tone is appropriate to the novel's first-person point of view." (AudioFile Magazine)

Would've been great if it hadn't involved romance.

I would give this book five stars if it hadn't included the relationship with the main characters husband. Ugh. I couldn't see past how perfect her partner was. Like be frfr. It's not a realistic marriage. Idk it just got on my nerves. If you can suspend disbelief during the interactions with her spouse, then the book is perfect.

different

I did like this story, but if you are very into time travel type stories go in without any previous expectations. Just go in fresh and take it at value. The narrator wasn't my favorite but didn't bother me enough to not continue.

Sweet and bittersweet, uplifting, contemplative

I didn't want this to end and milked it until the last. I've struggled to find a combination of narrator and book I actually want to devote time to. This was a perfect combination, a perfect story, perfectly written, with a surprise ending that made me love it even more, which I didn't think possible.

The blurb from Diana Gabaldon and comparisons to Outlander are wholly unfair. No one else writes such weighty tomes as Gabaldon with seemingly infinite casts that take immense concentration to follow and nearly require a family tree to keep straight all the meandering side plots. DG is great at what she does and I love her books, but that's a different category so for those complaining this isn't as "deep" or "rich" as Outlander, please do yourself a favour and forget Outlander exists while you read this. The similarities are time travel, and a talented author, and a focus on relationships. If you're looking for a tale involving kilts and magic stones, maybe ... read ... Outlander?

In any case, I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes they could change the past, mourns the loss of loved ones, and wonders what could lie beyond our sight. This is a beautiful tale and I will never forget it.

A clever and moving mother-daughter story

I really enjoyed the authors use of time travel and the theme of faith. It was well written and emotional.

I absolutely adored this book! I sincerely hope the author writes a sequel or writes another book. I will definitely be watching and waiting.

Fantasy

A thoroughly enjoyable read to be transported into the fantasy of being able to travel back in time. The author makes it all so real, I couldn’t put it down. Wished it would not end.

Enjoyable, light time travel read

I enjoyed Faye Faraway by Helen Fisher. While it's a time travel book, you won't find pieces of rich history or 'Outlander' type prose. Instead, Faye Faraway is a compelling read about a woman who finds herself in a strange position to be able to time travel and go back to her younger self.

The book is well written, entertaining and a light read that should be pleasing to most people. This would be an excellent beach read, or all-in-one rainy day read.

3 strong stars
