Publisher's summary

An introduction to EMDR, a proven trauma therapy with the power to heal, cowritten by a world-renowned therapist and a patient who experienced transformative relief through EMDR therapy.

Trauma is a part of life.

You or someone you care about has probably experienced trauma, whether “big-T” trauma, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse or the more common but no less significant “little-t” trauma that can result from divorce, job loss, painful childhood experiences, or any situation where you felt worthless, afraid, or powerless. Untreated trauma can lead to long lasting effects such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and difficulties maintaining intimate relationships.

But the good news is that we can heal—and it doesn’t have to take a lifetime. EMDR (which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a unique type of psychotherapy proven to help people recover from trauma and improve the quality of their lives.

Cowritten by a patient who experienced transformative relief from trauma through EMDR therapy, and a world-renowned psychologist who explains exactly how and why EMDR works, Every Memory Deserves Respect provides clear information while offering inspiration and hope.

Through compelling science and personal stories we learn how trauma is stored in the brain and body, continuing to cause pain and suffering, and how EMDR frees us by repatterning our thinking and emotional reactions. It explains why talk therapy has only a limited impact on trauma recovery, describes what to expect from gentle and targeted EMDR therapy, and offers guidance on how to find a therapist who is just right for you.

Powerful and moving: A must read

As an EMDR therapist, I felt this book was powerful. Deborah Korn described the experience of trauma on the individual on all levels, in a clear and understandable manner. The stories about Michael Baldwin’s trauma experiences were so powerful and helped to put into context what happens to people who have traumas as well as how the process of EMDR heals a person and creates a miraculous transformation and new beginning for that person. Thank you to the authors for your time and care you took in writing this book!! It is sure to help so many!!

Don’t wait … Listen to this book.

Don’t wait…. Listen to this book !!
The voices are perfect… and they convey the subject matter most effectively. Michael’s story, although tough, is dealt with grace and empathy. Debbie teaches the listener what trauma is, the telltale signs of hidden trauma… and most importantly, what the treatment, EMDR, is, how it is administered, and how it heals. This book will change your life.

Great read for therapists and clients alike

If you’re interested in, thinking about it even hesitant to try EMDR therapy this book is for you! There’s very little trigger context, and they warn you before reading it. They go through all stages, and really give all the information you need to makes an informed decision if it’s right for you. It also gives resources on how to find a good EMDR therapist. Following along with the physical copy of the book helped me with the visuals etc…

a compelling introduction to EMDR + Xe Sands!

I have recently become a big fan of Xe Sands' vocal talents with narration of nonfiction books, starting with how wonderful Xe's work was on "Peak Minds" by Amishi Jha. The warmth & compassion in Xe's voice really boosts the effectiveness of this book to me, as it is like listening to a wise friend give guidance over tea. This particular book is inspiring me to look into EMDR therapy for several people I care about, as well as having me wondering if it might help integrate some of my sensory processing issues - before listening to this book, I had no idea those could be related to my childhood trauma. I don't think EMDR will fully resolve them as I have additional diagnoses that point to inborn physical neurology differences, but if it might help make the tasks of auditory & visual processing less exhausting it would be time well spent to me.

Deep gratitude for all involved in this production.

Outstanding. Beautiful. Inspiring.

This book is a rare gift to clients, trauma clinicians and the field of trauma. It is a 1st person account of transformation bravely conveyed by Mr. Michael Baldwin, complimented by grounded clinical expertise and research, elegantly explained by Dr. Deborah Korn - brought to life by captivating imagery. Mr. Baldwin's poignant journey portrays deep personal transformation through his own interpersonal, developmental trauma. Dr. Korn compassionately and astutely guides the reader through the mechanisms of this powerful healing process. As an EMDR practitioner, trainer and consultant, I applaud this unique book for having filled a longstanding void. It is an accessible and engaging resource that I, my consultees and clients will appreciate in countless measure. I am grateful to the authors for making a profound contribution to the field, and for doing so for with honesty and integrity. I have only rarely been as marked by a clinical book as I was by this.

Not new material

I feel like this was like every other book out there. I didn’t really learn anything new.
