Publisher's summary

There's no wrath like that of a witch scorned.

Seventeen-year-old spirit witch Ava López is the self-appointed guardian of the witches and humans of Darkhaven, an idyllic village nestled between the forest and the sea. Her watch: vicious and bloodthirsty vampires.

Ava is a novice in the eyes of her coven. If she expects to protect them and the secrecy of their powers, she must gain better control of her own. When a full moon ritual goes awry, control may be lost forever, and Ava is exiled from her coven. Forced to seek refuge among the beings she had always sworn herself to hunt, she vows revenge on those who have upended her life.

But the more time Ava spends away from her coven, the more she discovers a startling truth: the witches haven't been honest with her. Ava's quest to strip the truth from everything she's ever known begins with the toughest realization of all - coming to terms with who she has become.

Love it!

Ava Lopez is a witch who considers herself the guardian of her coven. She will do anything it takes to make sure that her coven stays safe from the vampires. Lately, she's been feeling that something horrible is coming. Refusing to believe her, her mother refuses to allow her to go out hunting. Going against her mother's wishes, she puts herself and her best friend in danger. After a major battle, she decides to let one of the vampires go. She had no strength to fight him. She will soon find out how much of a mistake that decision was. There are some books that hook me from the very beginning. They make me crave more. They make me want to go great lengths to find out what happens next no matter the cost. This is one of those books. I really enjoyed it. I find Ava so relatable. I can't lie, I don't fully get behind some of her attitude and prejudices, but I get it. She was raised to believe that all vampires were bad. That there were no exceptions to that rule. I do wish that I could have seen this from another point of view as well. Ava was a great main character, but she could have used a secondary main character to fill in some gaps. This book was narrated by Angela Dawe. As far as I know, this is the first book that I've listened to by her. I can promise you that it won't be the last. I love her voice. It's just so alluring. It makes me want to keep listening. I did some homework on her titles. I've been trying to get in the habit of doing that lately. She has a pretty extensive and impressive list. It doesn't surprise me with how talented she is. I came in knowing that I would really enjoy the book. I didn't expect to fall in love with the book. I didn't expect to wish I was a part of the book. I didn't expect to be consumed by the book. I have no regrets. I got the three books in the series that are already out. I plan to get the other two books in the series when they are out as well. There's a part of me that's tempted to buy the paperback copies of them to have them on my shelves. Maybe one day it will happen. What I can say is that this won't be my last time reading this book.

Interesting.

An entertaining listen. I expected something a little more mature but it wasn't too offputting. The story was engaging enough that I am interested in continuing. However, I will probably switch to ebook as the narrator wasn't my favorite.
