Publisher's summary

"His perfect indifference, and your pointed dislike, make it so delightfully absurd!"

Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity, as misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. In this supremely satisfying story, Jane Austen balances comedy with seriousness, and witty observation with profound insight. If Elizabeth Bennet returns again and again to her letter from Mr Darcy, readers of the novel are drawn even more irresistibly by its captivating wisdom.

Housewives of the Georgian Era

I loved listening to the reader. She really did bring the book to life. The writing was so intriguing as well. Words and descriptions that made me giggle. Listening made me wish to adopt and familiarize myself with this language.

Lindsay Duncan is amazing

She’s an amazing actress and does one of my favorite novels absolute justice. My only complaint would be the suddenness between chapters. I believe this production was bought by Audible and I assume that there is a musical outro after each chapter that they are removing, but whatever it is, it would likely be preferable to the jolt.

Romanticism

English literature of the Romantic era does not throw words at the bibliophile but rather caresses the reader. Oh yes, and it is so nice to be cuddled. Romanticism is characterized by individual-centric stories and glorification of all that was typical English. For tree huggers though, do not forsake the fact it is often cited for its adoration of nature. Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen and narrated by Lindsay Duncan, is the epitome of that Romantic practice. A Romantic story travels as does a rose vine. Complicated latticework between peoples that allows you to fantasize a time that values justice, good breeding, and what is right will win out in the end. Pride and Prejudice is the story of a lower upper-class family, short on financial security, with a weak but loving father, a foolish mother, and five sisters whose personalities vary from one end of the spectrum to the opposite end. It is the story about how two of the sisters matriculate to the positive end of society achieving love above and beyond expectations and above and beyond the various misunderstandings and mishappenings that carry the plot intriguingly into happiness. Wonderful women heroines, admirable lovers; but do they match up in the end, or is this famous story a tragedy? Do yourself right, if you have not read Pride, or just have not read it lately. Do it. It just simply enhances life.

Excellent narrator, lovely story.

The narrator was great, did lots of different voices and made the story come alive. Can’t give this enough stars, and I hope Lindsey Duncan will record more Jane Austen soon.
