Publisher's summary

Embark on a chilling journey inside one of the world’s darkest and most dangerous places: Evin, the notorious Tehran prison. Here, prisoners are routinely tortured, abused, and violated. Executions are frequent and sudden. But for two women imprisoned for their Christian faith - Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh - this hell on earth was a place of unlikely grace as they reflected God’s love and compassion to their fellow prisoners and guards. Against all odds, Evin would become the only church many of them had ever known.

In Captive in Iran, Maryam and Marziyeh recount their 259 days in Evin. It’s an amazing story of unyielding faith - when denying God would have meant freedom. Of incredible support from strangers around the world who fought for the women’s release. And of bringing God’s light into one of the world’s darkest places - giving hope to those who had lost everything, and showing love to those in despair.

Captivating

Hearing about their lives in prison, being locked up for for their faith in Jesus, the boldness of their testimony before their accusers was very inspiring to me. The authors helped me visualize the agony of their sufferings yet still be inspired by the joy experienced from their ministry and from the friendships that were formed. It is greatly encouraging to hear how in the midst of such cruelty and deprivation God provided them such amazing protection and love.

a riveting testimony

I highly recommend this book; these two wan stood firm under trying conditions- serving 8 months in an Iranian prison.

I'd write - more but honestly - read it.

I wish I could ask them questions-- there are things they glossed over and other things they spoke in detail. (their memories are remarkable)

Excellent

the raw truth, mostly about two women, but includes the suffering and deaths of other women in a brutal prison.
I found it disturbing and difficult story, and an important story.

Remarkable and powerful

A truly inspirational story of faith, love and hope. A very powerful testimony. Sad to see what Christians in Iran go through.

Great Insight

This book provides a behind-the-scenes look at how a repressive regime treats those who disagree with their policies. It also shows how international pressure can make a difference. Finally, this story shows that, even under extreme circumstances, anyone can be a witness to the love and mercy of Christ.

Read this one in Print

Would you listen to Captive in Iran again? Why?

No.. I will read it in print. The narrator's pronunciation of Islamic terms is awkward at best and distracting at worst.

Would you be willing to try another one of Patty Fogarty’s performances?

If she narrates an American book, or a book where cultural teams are not required.. yes.

Any additional comments?

I tried to get into this book, but honestly had such a difficult time with the butchering of the Islamic terminology that I couldn't continue. I would be thrilled to read this book in print

Great Story but

The story was great showing what life is really like in Iran but the narrator sounded too old for two young woman of 26 and the reading was bland. The story was told from two different people but nothing changed in the narration. Other than that, which is a big part of listening to books vs reading, the story was captivating, sad and triumphant on how these young woman stayed true to their Lord and Savior. Very inspirational.
