Publisher's summary

When Chet the dog, "the most lovable narrator in all of crime fiction" (Boston Globe), and his human partner, PI Bernie Little, are approached by a down-and-out older man with a cardboard sign at an exit ramp, Bernie is shocked to discover the man is a former teammate from his high school baseball team. Chet and Bernie take Rocket out for a good meal, during the course of which Rocket refers to their class's prom queen, who supposedly vanished in a mysterious way. Bernie can't get the story off his mind, and goes back to his old high school, where much that he remembers turns out not to be true. Did the prom queen marry the captain of the football team, move to Hawaii, and later join some sort of commune in Kauai? The former football captain, now running a mining company in the desert searching for rare earth minerals of import to national security, is not helpful—and there are powerful and dangerous people not happy with the questions Bernie is asking.

Bernie soon learns that he misunderstood much about his high school years—and now, plunged into a dangerous case, Chet and Bernie discover what can happen when national security interests are thought to be at risk.

Another great Chet & Bernie adventure!

Loved it! it was a good mystery with interesting characters. And Chet's comments were both heartwarming and comical. There are always tidbits of wisdom that Quinn imparts through Chet. And Frangione's performance is genious!

Bernie for sheriff.

Chet may you live long and procreate often. So far I have loved every book and the narrator has perfectly captured Chet. I think Bernie should run for sheriff.

Chet is, once again, a very good boy!

I can't get enough Chet! I have listened to this book multiple times. His desert adventures make us all long for a dog like Chet.

Life lessons in relationships

After thoroughly enjoying about a dozen Chet and Bernie mysteries, I finally realized author Spencer Quinn is essentially writing about relationships. When Chet (the dog) frets because he sees they are being tailed by the bad guys in a big shiny red vehicle, Bernie (his human) thinks Chet is expressing that he needs to stop to pee. Similarly, when Bernie muses out loud that he might be putting the horse before the carrot, Chet looks around frantically for a horse. So many communications are not received or understood, but the relationship is held up by empathy, respect, admiration, and love. Subtle life lessons gleam through the everyday dialogue involving crime drama and laugh out loud humor in the lives of Chet and Bernie.

I always hope........🐾🐾

There is something truly captivating and wonderful about looking through Chet's eyes.

I wasn't sure about Bernie's new directions in life at first.....that has definitely changed. I love it. I'm now hoping for many more Chet and Bernie books to come. 🥰
