Publisher's summary

Max Freeman is seeking refuge from the familiar demons of his former life as a Philadelphia police officer in his secluded shack deep in the Everglades. But his self-imposed isolation is interrupted when he receives a desperate call from his best friend, attorney Billy Manchester. There has been a recent string of suspicious deaths - all elderly women, all from a poor neighborhood, and all with sizable and recently sold-off insurance policies - which the police have been unable or unwilling to investigate. Billy believes something sinister may be at work, and so, to help his friend, Max must reluctantly pry where he's not wanted and act like the cop he's trying to forget he was.

Enjoyable PI Mystery

This is the 2nd in the series that I have listened to by Jonathan king and I enjoyed both of them. There are enough twists and turns to keep it interesting and enough characterization so you feel connected to the story. It isn't full of sex or profanity, which I also appreciate. At times the reading was labored and didn't sound like conversation. It was a distraction occasionally but not enough for me to stop listening. I would recommend this as light listening

Not bad 31/2-4 🌟’s

Just wrote a review then lost it and didn’t want to do it over but I really wanted to give other possible skeptics a heads up!
Suffice it to say it’s a pretty good listen. I was skeptical but since I have allot in common with main character ie cop shot on job takes disability and moves from Philly (I think), to the Everglades in FL where he lives in a camp type dwelling on a river, giving up law enforcement and to reassess life. Which doesn’t last long as he is working with an attorney friend to investigate murders of black women in their 80’s in what the locals refer to as “Black Town.”
I was also hurt on the job in Florida as a cop, moved to another State and was back doing police work by circumstance.

Easy enough to get into being born and raised on the Gulf of Mexico, love the tranquility the sea grants and have lived like him off the beaten path so I could be right on the water with no neighbors.

I almost didn’t get it because of some of the reviews but am glad I did and it was a pick from the Plus Catalogue.... the book deals with the racial issue/s very well considering how insidious the topic can be, one of the reasons I almost passed it by. But if you hate racial slurs as much as I do I believe you will be impressed by how the author handles the issue in today’s world. So don’t not get it because of this issue. Growing up in the 50’s/60’s in FL I am well acquainted with how people felt/feel about race in the South and though it’s changed a “Little” it’s still way too prevalent. This main character seems like me in many ways when faced with that ugly face of racism. Although you know you may never reach some people you don’t hide your discomfort!
You’ll just have to read it to understand maybe but I really don’t think it should offend anyone!
So get it, try it, and let me know what you think with a thumbs up 👍 or a 👎.
Hope this helps a bit.

No suspense, no tension

Not as good as the first in the series. The narration good but the story is just too thin and not really that compelling.

Easy Listen

This book just went along telling a story. It wasn't deep and it really didn't have many surprises but it was okay. I never thought about stopping and listened to the whole thing. Maybe it was a little cheesy.
The only thing that made me crazy was that in the middle of the book, the character who stuttered, stopped stuttering. But have no fear - after a couple of chapters, he got his stutter back.

Just couldn't get into it

Mild profanity and overuse of the "N" word. Drugs, murder and a slow story. I really had a hard time paying attention to the story or even know what was going on.

interesting plot...

but too many side stories. I tended to zone out on a few of them. Otherwise, good story.
