Publisher's summary

Essence to gather. Cards to level. A summoner's deck to build.

After the collapse of the known world, Rowan Wilder opened his eyes and found himself on the first floor of the Tower. With a flawless memory and a mere eight cards to his name, he must venture out and prepare himself for the coming calamity.

In this place of blood and fantasy, Rowan has to not only survive, but thrive as he powers his way to the top of the tower. The Demonic Plague that has twisted the creatures on the upper floors is the least of his worries after he reveals the coveted origin of the summoner.

Cane in hand and Summons by his side, he'll have to tear his way through beasts and humans alike as monsters, criminals, and zealots try to hinder his ascent. Of course, he can maintain a sense of decorum while he faces these trials, yeah?

Don't miss the first book in the series A Summoner Awakens, a deck-building LitRPG series utilizing a card-based magic system with loads of customization and steady power progression. Perfect for fans of All the Skills and Towers of Heaven, as well as games such as Slay the Spire, Hearthstone, and Gwent.

not bad really

kinda all over the place with the multi character perspectives hoping from one to the next but the whole comes together a bit lengthy with the time redo to undo but overall better handled than the majority of time reset titles.

Good book

I’ve never been a fan of card growth. However I did find this book very good. Looking forward to reading book 2. Jeff hays did a masterful job as always.

Great beginning.

You’re treated to intriguing beginning to an overall story as well as an interesting first arc. The characters seem complex and we begin to dig a bit into motivations and the like, even with the antagonists. Exciting fight scenes and interesting magic system. The world building is probably the most impressive part. A really interesting take on for a fantasy setting.

A very enjoyable experience!

Once again, I find myself completely drawn in by Jeff Hays and his narration. I enjoyed it immensely, even though I went into it not expecting to like it as much, as I had not had any interest in this deck building concept previously. The story felt very much like a first arc should, where the character builds up their strength while enduring hardship (though not much, which is expected to some degree: the story is set up to make the first part of the journey very easy for the main character).

Some parts that I did not like in the story where related to the first ability the main character had earned; several times, a few of which were in quick succession, their first power apparently doesn't work properly and they do not acknowledge that at all. maybe it's being set up that way on purpose, but the main character constantly references the effect of their first power, so it feels like something they would notice not working.

This was still in a very good listening experience overall for me, but it is definitely a story in which the cards are stacked in the main characters favor. if you're looking for a lot of trials and hardship, this character only has them briefly, and thus far there was never a real feeling conveyed to the reader (or listener) that any of these problems that the main character was aware of would persist for more than a few chapters. there are events at the main character is not yet aware of that appear to have some gravitas, but it is unclear this time whether or not they will find it challenging.
