Publisher's summary

FBI profiler, Doctor Leo Reeves, has been working with his partner, Special Agent Max Prince, for more than a year now. They’ve been assigned to cases where their very lives were threatened, but nothing has prepared them to work in different states...on entirely different cases.

When Max’s former chief at the US Marshals Service asks him to help hunt down a dangerous fugitive he’d chased once before, Max is reluctant to fly all the way to Lexington, Kentucky to help catch the guy. Still, child predator, Solomon Purcell, has always been Max’s white whale, so the opportunity to put him away for good is just too tempting to ignore.

Just getting started on their own case at the FBI, Leo is forced to stay and help his team here at home. Leo feels like a fish out of water when Max flies out of town. The team he’s come to rely on, desperately needs to figure out who killed a mild-mannered family man in a horrific way. As they learn more about the man and his mentally ill wife, they begin to realize they are affiliated with a dangerous group of domestic terrorists.

Navigating cases on two sides of the country at the same time wasn’t on either man’s bucket list. Still, they really have no choice but to stick their cases out until the bad guys go down. When the ache for each other is encompassed by worry and fear for each other’s safety, things go from bad to worse. From the California high desert to the Kentucky hill country, the race to get back home to each other leaves both men breathless.

And when the final wrap up to their cases come, and the men are reunited...both Leo and Max realize life will never be the same.

Good

The story line was as good as you would expect from a Patricia Logan book however I did not like that Leo and Max were not in the same city…

Engaging and thrilling

This next installment of the series doesn’t disappoint. The action keeps you guessing and the relationships keep building and expanding. I love these interconnected series!

The good and the bad

I enjoyed this book. I really liked the narration. The dueling plots were entertaining though I had reservations about splitting up the main characters. I do feel like we did get some decent relationship development from them probably because they were separated. It didn't feel like all lust like it has for the past few books.

The good
The narration was great. They mysteries were complicated but not overly so, enough to keep you engaged and well paced. The characters developed well, their relationship felt a bit more fleshed out without the sex focus that the first 3 books had. I am not a fan of instalove so this was a little tough for me in the first 3.

The very frustrating
I am struggling with this author's portrayal of women. Not all women mind you, some female characters of her are great, like Kindness. The portrayal of Ruth in this book however was VERY frustrating to me. This author and all of her characters call this 16 year old victim a woman, and the WIFE of her kidnapper. They were NOT legally married yet she was never truly portrayed as a victim, always an attachment of her kidnapping 'husband'. I am honestly angry that they continued to call her the 'wife' even though in no way shape or form was that marriage legal or wanted. Another few mentions are the way she treats Ashley, Max's ex wife. Frequently calls her a 'basket case' (so extremely insensitive) because she went (probably clinically) insane after the death of her first child. Ludacris. I really think this author ca do better in her portrayal of female victims.

Least Fave of all Ms. Logan’s Books

Although good, I need Max and Leo to be in the same state for more than 2 days out of the weeklong book. Feels like they were only together for 5 mins tbh.
