Tragic Mind

Some books emerge from a lifetime of hard-won knowledge. Robert D. Pressured into a political career by his traditional, establishmentarian family, Nick Dormer longs to be a painter. Eventually, encouraged by the carefree aesthete Gabriel Nash, reminiscent of Oscar Wilde, he resigns from Parliament and follows his artistic dream. His journey is counterpointed with that of budding young actress Miriam Rooth, the subject of Nick's most successful paintings, and the "tragic muse" of the title, who too sacrifices an affluent life (marriage with Nick's cousin Peter) for her art.

Tragedy is one of the greatest challenges to resilience, and the ability to be resilient is a defining characteristic of a hero. In these two short tales, author Michael Haase takes a concise and focused magnifying glass as two different heroes face ultimate tragedies in their lives. Two different types of resilience are explored, and both ask the listener to consider their own choices in the face of tragedy.
