From March 1965-December 1972 the United States carried out the longest sustained naval aerial bombardment campaign in the history of modern warfare. By the time the conflict formally ended in January 1973 nearly 600 Navy aviators had lost their lives in Southeast Asia. Many of those men remain missing, with their ultimate fates unlikely to ever be known. Every cat shot, every mission, and every recovery aboard the carrier was a roll of the dice on whether they would live, die, or be taken prisoner and brutally tortured or murdered. Even as losses mounted and public support for the conflict...

Revised and updated version! STEPHEN COONTS, NY Times best-selling author of Flight of the Intruder -- “D. D. Smith's personal memoir of his years in naval aviation is more than a ‘I was there’ tale. He captures the myriad of challenges that was Naval Aviation before the Vietnam War. When I arrived in the fleet, D. D. Smith and his compadres were the squadron execs or COs who led us nuggets into the inferno of Vietnam… A huge tip of the hat to D.D. Smith. This book will appeal to every naval aviator or NFO of whatever era. Highly recommended.” But the book is much more. It is a ...

Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. Their stories involve Marines fighting bloody battles for hills soon abandoned after being captured; Naval aviators watching their wingman being shot down on missions targeting meaningless targets while Hanoi ...

The coming war has been delayed as the Axis powers continue to build up their militaries. Sir Basil is fighting to counter this, spurred on by vivid dreams of war and ...

In 1942, six Navy scout planes fly out from a secret American carrier in the Mediterranean and never come back. Lieutenants Stud Stacey and Jake Bell, two hard-flying pilots who have already lost too many friends, refuse to let the silence stand. Captured by the Luftwaffe and locked inside a Sicilian air base packed with bombers and paratroopers, they meet a battered R.A.F. pilot who knows too much and a Kommandant who will stop at nothing to learn where the American ...

You are an expert in fighter tactics and aircraft carrier operations, and it all leads to your command of an F-14 fighter squadron of more than three hundred people.

World War II is usually seen as a titanic land battle, decided by mass armies, most importantly those on the Eastern Front. Phillips Payson O'Brien shows us the war in a completely different light. In this compelling new history of the Allied path to victory, he argues that in terms of production, technology, and economic power, the war was far more a contest of air and sea than of land supremacy.

This revealing history explores Hermann Goering’s desperate creation of twenty-two Luftwaffe Field Divisions—air force personnel hastily repurposed as infantry and sent to the Eastern Front with disastrous results. Michael J. Stout delivers the first full account of these ill-fated units...
