Published shortly after these momentous events, her book Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen is an incredibly personal history of the islands that she was born to rule. Liliuokalani covers from her birth in 1838 through the reigns of her forebears to her own turbulent time as Queen of the Hawaiian Islands.

A thriving monarchy had ruled over Hawaii for generations. Taro fields and fish ponds had long sustained native Hawaiians but sugar plantations had been gradually subsuming them. In 1893 a small group of white planters and missionary descendants backed by the United States overthrew the Kingdom of Hawai'i and established a government modeled on the Jim Crow South. In Nation Within Tom Coffman tells the complex history of the unsuccessful efforts of deposed Hawaiian queen Lili'uokalani and her subjects to resist annexation, which eventually came in 1898.

The Hawaiian kingdom existed for about a century, from the early 1790s to 1893, starting when King Kamehameha finally united the islands and lasting until American planters and businessmen staged a coup and forced Queen Lili’uokulani to abdicate. During the century of its existence, the kingdom offered its native peoples considerable protection. For example, in the later 1800s, several thousands of Pacific islanders were, in effect, kidnapped and forced to serve as indentured laborers in places like the Guano Islands in Peru and plantations in Queensland.

The Pacific’s pirates were anything but romantic. They pillaged across the Pacific for five centuries, trafficking in slavery, stolen treasure, rape and murder. They died at alarming rates from scurvy, starvation, shipwreck and often at the hands of their fellow pirates. In Pirates and Palm Trees, award-winning Hawai’i writer Jan TenBruggencate tells the stories of Pacific piracy, with its tales of buried treasure, extraordinary violence and the brutal blackbirding years of the middle 1800s, when whole Pacific islands were depopulated to provide labor for guano mines and sugar plantations.
