O. Henry was the pen name of William Sydney Porter (1862-1910). He was a master of the short story with a surprise ending. In this story, part of the collection titled The Four Million, two old friends have made a promise to meet at a certain New York City corner after 20 years of separation. Will they each honor the agreement? What will they learn of their lives since they last saw each other?

The pair need $2,000.00 to pull off a fraudulent town-lot scam in Western Illinois. They decide to kidnap the only son of a prominent Alabama citizen in the small town of Summit. They should've known when they grabbed their target, who was at the time throwing stones at a kitten, that it would be best to leave him alone. Particularly after he beans Bill with a brick. The situation does not improve with time. O Henry, famous for his humor, plays on words, and plot twists makes this a highly amusing short story.

Venturers are those who seek excitement, unpredictability and chance in life. Forster is one such venturer, but finds his life in New York too boringly predictable. But when he meets Ives, the latter suggests they dine in a posh hotel together although neither has any money with them, and then toss a coin to see which of them will bear the consequences when they are unable to pay. The escapade turns out to have consequences which neither of them could have predicted.
