Auf ihrer Suche treffen sie nämlich nicht nur auf angriffslustige Riesenskorpione. Sie begegnen auch dem Fluch - jener Ratte, deren Leben Gregor damals aus Mitleid verschont hat.

Der Fluch, die weiße Ratte, will zum letzten, vernichtenden Schlag gegen das Unterland ausholen. Fieberhaft versuchen Gregor und seine Freunde, den Code zu knacken, mit dem die Ratten sich verständigen. Denn nur dann wird es Gregor gelingen, das Land und mit ihm Luxa, die er liebt, zu retten. Gregor fasst es nicht. Eben noch hat seine kleine Schwester Boots im Central Park gespielt und auf einmal ist sie verschwunden. Ein Riesenkakerlakenbein weist Gregor den Weg ins Unterland. Jenem Land unterhalb von New York, in das er nach seinem letzten Abenteuer auf gar keinen Fall mehr zurückkehren wollte. Aber im Unterland warten schon seine Fledermaus Ares, die rebellische Prinzessin Luxa und eine neue geheimnisvolle Prophezeiung auf ihn.

Wenn doch alles bloß ein Traum wäre. Nicht genug, dass Gregor und seine kleine Schwester durch den Lüftungsschacht des Wäschekellers in ein endlos scheinendes Nichts gefallen sind. Am Ende dieses Nichts steht auch noch ein riesiger sprechender Kakerlak. Sie sind im Unterland gelandet, einer eigenen Welt unterhalb von New York. Dort leben die Menschen in einem brüchigen Frieden mit Spinnen, Kakerlaken, Ratten und Fledermäusen.
