Long ago, before humans forgot them for all eternity, monsters and immortals retreated below ground to seek shelter. But what do the Greek gods do when they're bored? They bring back the Olympic Games - only a lethal version. The newest contender in these bigger, deadlier games is a young human girl they kidnapped from the streets above. For Kira Lier, it's kill or be killed as she races against beasts she thought were just myths, to cross the finish line and win a chance to earn her freedom.

Keira must have some imagination or I missunderstood the ending.

"Underland" is a breathtaking, dark fantasy that catapults readers into an immersive world of myth and legend, where gods and mortals clash in a fight for survival. Chandra Hahn masterfully weaves a narrative that is both a gripping tale of human versus monster and a thought-provoking commentary on our very existence.
With "Underland," Hahn delivers an unapologetically intense, adult fantasy experience. The world she creates is alive with rich textures, vivid imagery, and an atmosphere of foreboding menace. Each character—human and divine alike—is meticulously crafted, their complexities and motivations propelling the story forward in a dizzying dance of plot twists and turns.
At the heart of this captivating story lies Hahn's remarkable gift for world-building. From the labyrinthine Underland with its twisting tunnels and hidden arenas to the gods who lurk above, each location and character feels like a tangible, breathing entity. It's as if you can step into Hahn's creation and breathe its very air.
The characters, too, are a highlight. Kira Lier, the young protagonist, stands out as a strong, determined, and fiercely relatable hero who defies the odds even as the world around her grows increasingly deadly. Her interactions with the monsters and other contenders in the Underland games are both electrifying and heart-wrenching, making it impossible to look away.
If you're a fan of dark, epic fantasy that challenges and enthralls, then "Underland" is an absolute must-read. Hahn has created a true masterpiece that will leave you gasping, cheering, and eagerly anticipating the next book in the series. Do not miss this electrifying ride.
Rating: 5/5 stars
Recommendation: For mature readers of dark fantasy who enjoy a thrilling, thought-provoking tale with complex characters and a richly detailed world.

Chanda Hahn takes a sledgehammer to the whimsical world of Lewis Carroll and reconstructs it into something far more twisted — a place where shadows whisper secrets and the familiar becomes grotesque. This isn’t the tea party you remember. It’s a descent into madness, and you’re invited to every unsettling moment.
The story follows Lyssa, a girl plagued by visions and memories that don’t belong to her — or maybe they do. When she falls into Underland, she quickly learns that nothing here is as it seems. The White Rabbit is terrifying, the Queen is delightfully psychotic, and every step further into this world feels like slipping deeper into a nightmare you can’t wake from. The air itself seems to hum with danger. Hahn’s writing pulses with eerie beauty, a lyrical dread that makes your skin crawl in the best way.
What makes Underland so effective — and so disturbing — is its unpredictability. Just when you think you’ve caught your breath, it shoves you into another corridor of horror. Hallucinations, broken fairytales, and psychological torment lace every page. It’s like Coraline met Pan’s Labyrinth at midnight and they raised a monster.
If you enjoy stories where sanity is fragile and danger wears a smile, Underland will satisfy your dark craving. But be warned: once you enter, Underland doesn’t let you go.
Even when the book is closed… you’ll still hear it whispering.

Kira is a seventeen year old who is dragged off, and sold in a world that shouldn't even exist. Full of every imaginable creature that is only myth and legend, she's forced to completely reevaluate everything she knows about such mythical creatures. And in this world, the only way to survive is to survive the games. But little do the creatures realize Kira's own stubbornness and will to live. With her life hanging in the balance, Kira realizes quickly that she needs to stay on guard constantly, and more importantly...try not to get eaten before the games even begin.
Underland shows us a whole new slew of characters that I was really excited to hear about, and I'm glad Hahn expounded on them versus glossing over these new creatures. The plot was spot on, and there was always something happening that captured my attention, which was great! The narrator also did a very good job; however, the very end felt totally anti-climatic as the narrator kind of just said the last sentence, which should have left me with a feeling of "dun, dun, dun" versus feeling like she just stopped talking all of a sudden. I actually went back and literally read the last bit, which still kinda sucked as it does end on a cliffhanger. I will say the other part that had me shaking my head a bit was the attraction of the heroine to a certain character. Toward the end she thinks of his arms around her, and technically I can see the relationship going there, but it seemed to happen too fast on her end just on one section. On his end I can see it totally happening, but I digress...Underland truly was a great short read/listen, and I did fully enjoy it and hated to see it end so quickly! I cannot wait to see what happens for our heroine, and what trials she goes through next!
Short Read, But Great New Starter Series!

The narrator's voice wasn't distracting either, which I find can ruin a book when the narrator doesnt fit well.
Overall compelling story, clean, great for all ages, I'm 23 and loved it, I'd be comfortable recommending this to my youth kids as well as college friends, and my mom read it and loved it too. Very cute, made me happy. Headed to downloading the next book!
