The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a horror story by American author Washington Irving. Written while Irving was living abroad in Birmingham, England, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was first published in 1820. It is among the earliest examples of American fiction with enduring popularity, especially during Halloween because of a character known as the Headless Horseman believed to be a Hessian soldier who lost his head to a cannonball in battle.

"The Real Legend of Sleepy Hollow," based on Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" tells the story of the real Ichabod Crane. A conniving Lothario, he travels from town to town, along with his trusted servant Johann in the guise of a School Headmaster, eventually seducing whatever hapless widow falls prey to his schemes. The Village of Sleepy Hollow though, is different. Upon arrival, Ichabod is haunted by the specter of a mysterious Headless Horseman. Washington Irving, the first American writer to make his living by his profession, was born April 3, 1783. At the age of 6, he was introduced to his namesake, George Washington. He studied law but then was sent to Europe because of his health and was to spend 17 years abroad. When he was 35 his family's business went bankrupt. It was then that he began to support himself by writing. He wrote letters, essays and short fiction.
