I had never read or watched Lonesome Dove, so the sheer scope of the novel caught me completely by surprise. It is a masterpiece of American fiction: a vast canvas painted with beautifully rendered landscapes, deeply drawn characters, suspenseful storylines, and just enough comic relief. And the choice of Will Patton as the narrator was, simply, perfect. I have long been a fan of his, but this pairing was a triumph that cemented the entire audiobook experience. Well done!

(A necessary side note: I strongly recommend listeners skip the foreword by Taylor Sheridan. The inclusion of a major plot spoiler concerning Newt’s fate in a subsequent book felt pointless and mean-spirited. Avoid it entirely to preserve the narrative integrity of this novel.)

The previously available audio version of this title was so disappointing due mainly to technical issues and the age of the original recording. Here we have a clean, clear listen, but more importantly, a master voice actor who brings these characters to life. This is easily one of my top five books of all time. What a joy to find such a fantastic audio version now available. I would envision myself returning to this again and again.

Masterful narration of a masterpiece

Few books I have loved more than Lonesome Dove. Fewer characters I have loved more than Augustus McCray. It took me over 30 chapters to fall in love with Lonesome Dove but after I just couldn’t stop. I think it’s the fastest I’ve ever read a book in my life. 960 pages in 16 days. I’ve never been enamored and absorbed by so many characters at once. Many books I have read compare and have wharped me in but Lonesome Dove makes the West, a place incredibly close to my heart, come alive at a time of my life I have longed for it.

I remeber early on the book when the crew departed for Montana, McMurly’s simple few paragraphs Bolivar’s inner thoughts, a very minor character. Even his simple thoughts dragged me in, Lonesome Dove’s writing I’ve never expirenced before, only Ken Follett has compared for me.

But the overarching themes are what drive this book above so many others. Regret, duty, compassionship, and even death itself. The entire books spins you off into endless contemplation about your own life, and even man so seldom spoken as Captain Call sucks you in. Hell, even the depession of El Mira and cowardice of Jake Spoon get you thinking.

Though I loved Augustus McCray so passionately, I found the deepest character to be Clara Allen. Her regret and failure to understand her own decesions regardless of how much others admired her shows thay deep down we are all flawed and that even the most seemingly perfect amongst us fight out own inner battles.

I recommend for all seeking to escape the depression, monotomy, and lack of feeling that often drape over our 21st centuries. Few books I hold more highly.

PS The performance by the narrator is INCREDIBLE. Amazing audiobook. His gus voice oddly kept dragging me towards Paul Newman sort of even though I didn’t invision Gus as looking like Paul Newman.
