Dave O'Connell
Dave O'Connell describes his own military service during the Vietnam era and contrasts it with the news accounts of the day. He arrived at the 7th Infantry Division in Korea as an infantryman. His duties included a stint on the DMZ during which the Pueblo was captured and UN forces had their highest casualty rate between the armistice and today.. He knows whereof he speaks because he finished his tour as NCO-in-Charge of the 7th Division Public Information Office. Some of the news coverage he critiques was his own.
O'Connell also examines the personal corrosive effects of army service, including corruption, racism, censorship, and the arbitrary and capricious exercise of power. It is not a place that you can be all that you can be. However, there are a few chuckles along the way.
