Fascinating

The life of Eugene Bullard writes itself. The fact that his life story hasn't been turned into a movie (other than a fictionalized representation in the movie Flyboys) only serves to demonstrate just how much Hollywood lacks imagination. Destitute stow-away on a German Freighter. Professional prize fighter. Highly decorated and severely wounded infantry soldier during World War I who became the first black fighter pilot. Successful nightclub owner who rubbed elbows with the likes of the future king of England, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong and who Ernest Hemingway wrote into one of his novels. Successful jazz drummer who recorded and toured with Louis Armstrong. Member of a French spy network who almost died in a gunfight in his own nightclub while tangling with gangsters. Unofficial "soldier" in World War II and wounded fighting the Nazis. Refugee who barely escapes occupied France with his life. A larger than life character who also had many faults (drinker, hair-trigger temper). Devoted father who raised his two daughters pretty much as a single parent. The story is almost too incredible to believe.

Now, that being said, this audiobook has its faults. The authors' attempts at dialogue are choppy and probably should have been avoided.

James Shippy has a nice voice but also has a Shatner-esque cadence that at times drove me mad. Take this little gem from chapter 24, "...even met with the legendary commissioner of baseball, Kennisaw Mountain Landis.......to push for inclusion......to no immediate effect." Furthermore, he is often inconsistent with his French.

If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it.

Great Adventure

The life and adventures of Eugene Bullard is an incredible ride. In spite of some unnecessary padding here and there, the story as a whole is well told. James Shippy’s voice has a wonderful tone.
The primary issue I had was with the pronunciation of anything French. It is brutally abysmal and distracting. I don’t blame the narrator for perhaps biting off more than they could chew, but perhaps Audible could have found someone at least relatively familiar with the language given that a majority of this book takes place in France.

Captivating & Historic Miliary Adventure

Enjoyable presentation and a must Share for my library. 5 stars. Redefines our lack of understanding and cultural education in a modern society.

Excellent audio!

What an awesome read! Eugene Bullard lead an exciting life of I swear at least 10 men in his short 66 years of life! I highway encourage you to give this book a try!

The fascinating story of a unique life

An amazing life well worth learning about.. The writing style was above average, the presentation clear and engaging.

The victors write history...

A very balanced, well researched and balanced tale of a larger than life human being. Had he been white, he would be in every children's history book.

The racist and classist reality of being of color until very recently needs to be recounted in a humane and open manner as this recording to allow all of us to embrace our common humanity.

Of all the injustices recounted, having the Today TV host and staff leave Bullard earning the same meager salary after learning of his incredible life, and going on with their entitled lives, was painful.

A man or woman cannot be judged by his/her physical appearance but by character.

Black history

While I enjoyed all the information, it was at least 13 sentences too many about other people ie Paul Robeson.

An Extraordinary Life

This is a wonderful book with an inspiring biography about a true American hero. I had never heard anything of him before, and was completely captivated by the ingenuity, grit, and sense of duty of Eugene Bullard. Shippy did a great job with the narration. This is a great read.

A true American Hero

This version of the story of Eugene is engaging and interesting. The author meanders at times and then somehow weaves the meandering into the impact of the story. In my opinion, This man’s story should be required reading.

What a great biography

Tom craven, does a great job in research, and presenting the facts of such great people in the past. What a shame we let racism get in our way, and not let us all really grow in the spirit of real love, and we do all have the same color blood red.
