Publisher's summary

Organizational psychologist Dr. Waters is a happily solitary guy with a few deep attachments, including to his boss Paresh Rajput, the owner of a thriving hi-tech aerospace company. Until something really bad happens to CEO Rajput, which throws Waters into a lunatic swirl of murderous stalkers, corporate intrigue, amorous female executives, and crafty cops who see the inscrutable psychologist as murder suspect number one.

Waters is hardly defenseless. A weight-lifter and former wrestler, ace poker player and master student of human nature, he takes it all on with surprising strength and determination. If they only knew. As with the connivers surrounding him, Waters has his own secrets. Autistic as a child, he lives with the consequences some blessings, others a curse. And a love affair that's hidden even more deeply, or so he thinks.

You're Dead is a mystery/thriller, an adventure story, though in the context of the present zeitgeist the financial stakes of hi-tech ascendancy and flourishing commerce, corporate and personal venality, manipulations by the rich and powerful men and women and the ugly presence of base criminality that crackles around the fringes. It's about troubled and troubling minds and institutions that struggle to assert relevance, but also how one man, single-minded and apart, can disrupt what the lead detective on the case calls, "Their clever-clever ways".

Every writer has their themes and pre-occupations. For Knopf, it's the intricacies of the mind, the most complex organism in the universe. The aberrations, as well as the indefinable "normal". You're Dead is an action-filled examination of what happens when minds of all kinds collide.

Plot thumbs up-narration painful

A great story badly told by narrator. Sounds like a robot. I wanted to hear what happens, so I kept listening.

Interesting Story Line

I enjoyed both the narrator and the plotting. The fact that Dr. Waters could read people and handle complex problems, a nice change from the usual detecting devices. I hiope Chris Knopf writes another book featuring Dr. Waters.

Good read.

Storyline had a lot of twists so unlike some books I didn’t guess the ending until the very last reveal

Decent story and reader

Reader has a pattern of hesitating mid sentence with a slight emphasis that makes the reading a little sing songish at times. its hard to ignore once you notice it.

Not sure if it was the writing or the reading, but I was not impressed.

Story is interesting, but…

As far as we know at this point, autism is not “curable”, especially not from a beh’vl mod approach - so it’s irritating that that is not art of this story. Also, the narration is “bouncy”- narrator puts inflection where it isn’t needed, or puts an odd inflection where none/something different would have worked better. So, I won’t be finishing this one.

Exxxxxcellent Smithers….

I completely enjoyed this book and could stop listening. Fast paced with many twists and turns, Thus was kept entertained throughout. Quite a few characters to keep up with but each was described thoroughly and thoughtfully and all skillfully brought to life by stellar narration.
I listened at 1.3 x the rate, which was great for me as my mind and the story moved quickly. I highly recommend!

It’s half baked.

A well read thriller with plenty of unpredictable twists and turns. The problem? The lead character who is meant to be a psychologist but is totally unbelievable. The cliches and inaccuracies were really annoying. If they plan on a sequel, perhaps the author could speak to a practitioner who can give them some guidance on what qualified Psychologists or Counsellors really do and how they understand clients.
