MSNBC anchor Jonathan Capehart is one of the most recognizable faces in cable news. But long before that success, Capehart spent his boyhood growing up without his father, shuttling back and forth between New Jersey and rural Severn, North Carolina, and contemplating the complexities of race and identity as they shifted around him. It was never easy bridging two worlds; whether being told he was too smart or not smart enough, too Black or not Black enough, Capehart struggled to find his place. Then, an internship at The Today Show altered the course of his life, bringing him one step closer to his dream. From there, Capehart embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

Yet Here I Am takes us along that journey, from his years at Carleton College, where he learns to embrace his identity as a gay Black man surrounded by a likeminded community; to his decision to come out to his family, risking rejection; and finally to his move to New York City, where time and again he stumbles and picks himself up as he blazes a path to become the familiar face in news we know today.

Honest and endearing, Yet Here I Am is an inspirational memoir of identity, opportunity, and finding one's voice and purpose along the way.

Jonathan Did It!

Jonathan's book was well worth the time I spent listening. I've loved watching him on MSNBC for years and since I knew very little about him, I was thrilled to hear his life's story.

As an (out) gay, Black man, he has beaten the odds of discrimination based on these entities that cannot be changed, even if others can't accept them.

I love his candor. I will not forget his mantra- "If someone asks you what you want, tell them." Words to live by!

Beautiful and poignant stories about a MOST amazing American life. A joy to hear and full of great insights for white Americans like I am, I like and respect Jonathan as a journalist and now I love knowing his authentic self even more. Great book. Congratulations!

Jonathan Capehart recounts his life so far

Author Capehart tells his improbable story with energy and gusto. I have been a fan for some years and was surprised at all the setbacks and disappointments he has encountered, and how much he has bounced around in the world of journalism and politics. He has however remained true to his principles as a gay black man and has staunchly supported the rights of people of color, and of the LBGTQ+ community. He finished this book before "Trump 2.0", so on most Friday evenings I can watch his growing horror and dismay at the loss of so many good things we thought we had achieved. But he has not lost his sense of humor!

I always like watching Jonathan Capehart on PBS Fridays I now feel I know Jonathan so much better. Í identified with some of his experiences. I felt sad at times and smiled at times because I could identify. Such open and honest experiences shared with us. This is excellent!

love knowing more about one of my favorite commentators

I like that it was so honest and open. I like that he read it himself. I am not normally in favor of authors reading their own books but this one like Michelle Obama's book turned out to be the right thing to do. both he and David Brooks have written Stellar books as well as being stellar commentators.

He kept going.

Though there were tough moments he kept going. He didn’t let the hard times stop him. I really related to the panic attack story.
