Publisher's Summary

The things that go bump in the night are supposed to be headboards, not monsters.

Leaving my husband was hard. Trying to face the world alone with my teenage daughter is the sort of thing nightmares are made of, but I caught a break. My best friend just hired me for a great job. It's not anything special; simply managing the leasing office of this very fancy and highly exclusive neighborhood, yet the perks mean I get my second chance.

Speaking of perks, my rent-free house is right beside not just one handsome man, but five! Each one is hotter than the last, and all of them seem interested in me. Maybe I can't remember the last date I was on, but if I want to master being a strong woman, then this is a good place to start. It's just dating, right? Normal life stuff. Not so much.

Everyone around us has these strange golden eyes...and there are the questions no one will answer. And who cares if there's a lot of wildlife running around at night? I do, especially when a wolf keeps sneaking into my backyard. I have a kid to worry about. Things have got to change before someone gets bitten!

Normal is going out the window, and fast.

My neighbors say I don't belong here, and they don't mean because I'm Hispanic. Never mind that I just heard a man growl. Now they're talking about fated somethings, and I'm pretty sure they mean me. I feel like I'm going crazy! Because when I said I wanted to learn how to be strong, this wasn't what I meant at all. Still, when it comes to taking care of my little girl, I will definitely learn how to be the biggest bitch on the block.

I just hope that doesn't become literal.

The Wolves Next Door series contains some profanity and mature content.

Good

The book is very well written and has a lot of light humor. It's a medium burn RH. The characters are all likeable and had you rooting for them. If you are looking for fun light RH shifter romance, would definitely recommend.

****SPOILER ALERT*******

This bugs me so much that even though the rest of the book was good I don't know if I will continue with the next one. Elianas daughter Gabby gets super sick, come to find out that her boyfriend purposely bit her to turn her to a wolf. Eliana gets told that Gabby might die and if she does survive there is a 50/50 chance she will never turn back human. AND on top of that obviously at the same time finds out werewolves exist. ALSO that her 5 men mated her without telling her but had declared it to the pack so everyone else knew. Sooo finds all that out within like and hour and instead of flipping her shit like a normal person. She just basically accepts everything and isn't pissed off. WHAT!!! No mama bear would have that reaction. SORRY NO! I just can't get past how she handles the situation or lack of handling I should say.

Can't decide if I like it or hate it.

I have issues with this book. Like the story line is good and I love the concept, but there are things I can't stand that are putting me off finishing. I have about 5 hours left and I am making myself listen at this point. Here are a few things I have problems with.
1. I am a big fan of RH romance books. I like the whole idea of multiple men falling for the same woman. What I don't like in this book is that it feels forced for the other guys other than Lane. Almost like they don't have a choice. I also don't like that Ian gets to be the boyfriend while her fated mate is thrown in the background agonizing over not being able to be as close to her as Ian. This really irritates me. It seriously makes me want her to just chose Lane and to say to hell with Ian. I think the whole "Bata's can't have their own mates" is also really f**ked up. I want a story where the men have a choice and they CHOOSE to be with Elaina because they want to, not because they have to.
2. I hate the fact that sometimes the women get referred to as "b*tch" GABBY was even called it! I know that's what they call a female dog, but that put me off and making me lose a little respect for the community.
3. Were not getting much of a story here. I know little to nothing about the guys and Elaina is far from the strong female lead that I prefer in books. This book is 14 hrs long and I feel like maybe half of it is Elaina talking about her age and insecurities, and the guys literally only talking about mating her. And that doesn't even feel genuine.
4. I can't put into words how boring this is. There is no action, no angst. Nothing.

So right now, with 5 hours left, I am pretty much just rooting for Lane. He is the only one who I feel genuinely cares about her, for the others, it's just forced.

Great performances, good story, weird sex

I really enjoyed this story with the concept of integrating humans into their lives and the voices. I love supernatural stuff and werewolves especially. where this story goes wrong is with the gang bangs and poly relationship... I'm not into multiple people sex and the sex scenes aren't needed, they're not even well written and even more awkward being heard aloud, I just skipped them. The flirting and poly aspect outside of the sex scenes seems believable, though not being in the poly community I can't say for sure, the sex is weird, Lane is fated to Elaina but he isn't her boyfriend, Ian is and now no one else in the Alpha/Beta pack can have their own relationship.... yet Ian wants to be a different pack leader... I don't know maybe I missed something or it's not explained well but something about the forced poly relationship doesn't sit well. I can't express enough how weird the sex scenes are and if it's not your style, just skip it and you'll miss out on nothing.

Well written and well read

Auryn Hadley always tells interesting, engaging, and entertaining stories that draw you in and this book is no different. I plowed through the actual books in 3 days and started the audio because I knew it would make my workday better. The narration and intonation are spot on, capturing the nuisances of the characters and their emotions. Honestly, I am sort of resenting myself for taking the time to write this review instead of starting the next book, but Ms. Hadley and the narrators deserve thanks and accolades for this book.

Good AND Bad

The good stuff:

1. The pack dynamic and "mating ritual" ideals are a nice slight shift from the norm.

2. Aiden Snow's performances are so much better these days, with only a couple of mispronunciations. Good African American narrators make me happy.

3. This is a REALLY full-length story. You'll get your money's worth. Even better (and really unusual for a series), there's no cliffhanger. You could finish this story with the sense that it's the end. There is a book #2, but you don't have to move on. You can be content at the end of book #1 (hope that makes sense).

On to the negatives, which are major enough to keep me from spending the credit on book #2:

1. While I know that the daughter is mentioned in the book summary, and is a part of the plot, the reverse harem paranormal romance - which is why you're interested, right? - somehow took a sharp turn into teen angst universe. So much that I found myself wincing during a few of her monologues. It's clear that the writer wanted me to care about the teen character way more than I did. I didn't care about the chapters-long school play rehearsals, or the bffs. The book's climax directly resulted from the teen's narcissistic, completely illogical and irrevocable life-altering decision, and the writer treats the teen's ridiculous rants as the voice of reason for seven adults.

2. Although this is a "fated mates" romance, only one of the five men are a mate. The others sort of shrug and go with it. None of them are in love. One even only needs a place to "stick his *****".

3. The sex scenes were...odd? The romance was steamy, but the actual physical sex...it felt off, like the writer wanted to rush through it? It could be the narrator. See #4. EDIT: Its been a couple of days since I wrote this review, and I've finally figured it out. The problem with the sex scenes is that Lola James slows down her narration...I mean, a LOT...when she's reading sex scenes. So it comes off sounding like a nursery rhyme.

4. Lola didn't differentiate between the male characters' voices, and the writer only mentions the speaking character once. So unless you're really listening, you'll spend the whole discussion wondering who's talking.

The narrators were excellent... Story was lacking.

The narration was excellent... However, the story line was sorely lacking something. I couldn't get over how many times the main character mentioned her age (40 years old) or her lack of self confidence (it was a major plot device... her self esteem/lack there of). The majority of conflict was based in the female main characters head and how she didn't feel good enough/on the same level of the men. It's hard to explain mostly it just felt exhausting or tedious... The same conversations had over and over again because the female mc didn't think she was an appropriate match for the 5 male mc's. The men were constantly talking about how awesome, sexy, wonderful, perfect the female mc was but the female mc didn't sell an ounce of it. Mostly, I felt the repetition of hearing the same things over and over again. Bummed.

Very enjoyable & engaging,...

I have read most of Auryn's books & always look fwd to the next one. Each series is something new, inventive & draws you in, & while werewolves are not a new theme she gives her trademark fresh twist to the story. Auryn writes with a depth, richness & versatility you don't often come across.
I found the narrators engaging, well read & easy to listen to - a very immersive experience. I would suggest that is probably best not listened to in public as the evolving relationship gets pretty steamy! I will happily be getting the next two in the series as they become available.

LOVE this book

I truly enjoyed this audiobook. The narrators did an outstanding job. This book is overall sweet and focused on relationships building between the characters. I loved the pace, the dedication of the characters towards eachother ans the fact that this was low on drama. It was a nice breather to read about realistic characters and real relationships.

Terrible Story Line

Author twists traditional werewolf lore into a story focused on the main character’s age and her having 5 boyfriends. 👎

This book has EVERYTHING!

When I started listening to this book, I didn't know that it would be so very well rounded.
a strong female bringing up her daughter and the conversations that they have.
yes, it is a RH and there are some mega hot scenes, but I have to tell you as a mother of an adult daughter, that the values that are imparted from mother to daughter, is the highlight of this book for me.

Great.

If I could change one thing it would be that the actress plays the femald roles and the actor plays the male roles, as it can get annoying when they randomly switch.
Otherwise are great book I'm going to listen to the next one now.

Had I known what the subject was I’d have not even tried. Werewolves in modern society; teenage reading maybe, but not for me.

Wow

There are not enough star ratings for this book as far as I’m concerned. I was really sad for it to end. I loved all the quirks in the characters. I felt all the emotions they did. My husband laughed when I replied to the book with my comments during one of the characters discussions lol. Seriously the book is well written, easy and addictive to listen to and one of my favourites. I will certainly be listening to it again and again. Thank you for writing it.

Couldn’t put it down!

Absolutely loved how this was written. I was abit skeptical when I read the blurb about 5 males but never a dull moment and didn’t feel like random dribble. Worth a read/listen.
