Something darker than the devil stalks the North Carolina woods in Wolf Worm, a new gothic masterpiece from New York Times bestselling author T. Kingfisher

"Narrator Mary Robinette Kowal wonderfully conveys the wryly funny prose and the creeping horror of the story. Giving each character a distinct voice, Kowal deftly and consistently moves between them and superbly renders Sam’s voice." —Library Journal on A House with Good Bones (Starred Review)

“I saw the devil in these woods.”

Sonia Wilson is a talented scientific illustrator—but she is only able to follow her dream because of her father’s reputation as a renowned scientist. Such is the lot in life for a woman in science in 1899. And after his death, she is left without work, prospects, or hope.

So when the reclusive Dr. Halder offers her a position illustrating his vast collection of insects, Sonia jumps at the chance to move to his North Carolina manor house and put her talents to use.

Once there though, she encounters dark happenings in the Carolina woods, and even darker questions come to light, like what happened to her predecessor? Why are animals acting so strangely, and what is behind the peculiar local whispers about “blood thiefs?”

With the aid of the housekeeper and a local healer, Sonia discovers that Halder’s entomological studies have taken him down a twisted road. His ground-breaking discoveries come with a cost—one that Halder is paying with human flesh.

If Sonia can’t find a way to stop the monstrosity, she may be next under the knife.

As a plant pathologist and naturalist, I was very excited about this story and enjoyed it a lot. It really wasn’t quite as gruesome and gory as many reviewers are saying. Maybe I’m desensitized from my decades of observing rotten things. I did enjoy the book, and I loved reading about a woman who was a scientist and an artist from that era. I thought the story meandered a lot and was a bit more predictable than some of her previous books. I never found it scary and sometimes I felt the writing didn’t give me enough credit as a reader (she really spelled things out for the reader). I loved the descriptions of the illustrations and the colors and early in the book some of the descriptions of artistic process. I wanted to learn more about Rose and Jackson and would’ve liked more character depth overall, I would read a story about all of them. Overall good, but surprisingly not my favorite, despite my ability to relate to the protagonist. (Snake Eater was my favorite T Kingfisher story, and I think hard to beat).

Hmmm. Maybe I’m desensitized 🤷‍♀️

I really enjoyed this book. As an NC native who moved from Wilmington, NC to the town next to Siler City, I loved hearing the mentions of the towns and our lore (The Devil’s Tramping Ground).

I was looking for a good creature horror and it scratched that itch for me. I would have loved for it to have been longer, maybe to learn more about certain characters and their backgrounds. Maybe go even deeper into the lore of it all. But, still enjoyable nonetheless. Did not LOVE the narrator and did find the voices a bit distracting. Not the worst by any means, but either stick with an accent or don’t do one at all.

Good creature horror!

Loved the creative take on a horror story. I appreciated the brave female protagonist, creepy setting, and a well-crafted and researched scientific approach.
