Story
Wizard scouts are the greatest fighting force the galaxy has ever seen, but after years of war between the Intergalactic Empire and the bat-like Crosoians, the wizard scout corps numbers have dropped to near extinction levels. One of the few remaining wizard scouts is Richard Shepard. In an all-or-nothing gambit, the bats have gathered the largest fleet of warships the galaxy has ever seen to destroy the weakened humans once and for all. The Empire's only hope for survival may well lie on the shoulders of Richard and the crew of the recon ship Defiant.

Warner spent his days like almost anyone else. He got up, went to work, answered phone calls in a call center, went home, spent time with his daughter, and went to sleep. Only to repeat the pattern over and over and over. Life was as mundane as anyone could ever fear it to be. Today was the day that all that would change. On this day, his daughter Maya would be nearly fatally injured, plunging Warner into a world of paranormal creatures, monsters, and magic he’d never known existed. The only consolation is that he discovers he’s not quite human, either.

Publisher's Summary
Wizard scouts, once the greatest fighting force the galaxy has ever known, face extinction as the Intergalactic Empire's war of attrition with the bat-like Crosioians takes its toll. In a desperate all-or-nothing attempt to snatch victory from defeat, the Empire calls on Wizard Scout Richard Shepard, the last of the legendary wizard scouts, to pave the way for the largest invasion force the Empire has ever assembled. Caught in political crosscurrents that could change the Empire forever, Richard's only allies are his battle computer and the elf high priestess, Jeena.
As fleets of starships battle it out, human and elf are forced to find a way to overcome their prejudices long enough to fight their common enemy. Thrust from one frightening nightmare to another, the two discover an intergalactic war may be the least of their worries, as demonic forces assemble to overwhelm three galaxies. Richard and Jeena soon discover their only path to victory may well require sacrifices beyond anything they have ever imagined.
Are Richard and Jeena the star-crossed lovers foretold in prophecy? Can two such disparate races work together to avert the pending crisis, or are they destined for slaughter along with every other living being? In a backdrop of intergalactic warfare the likes of which the galaxy has never seen, a lone wizard scout and an elf high priestess try to hold back the forces of darkness long enough to make a difference. It may well be too much to ask, even for a wizard scout.

I was hooked the whole way through. Amazing!
I loved it so much. I've been hooked since the first book. I usually listen to my books only when I'm at work so that I don't finish my books too quickly. but I knew I couldn't resist the urge to listen to this book all the way through even at home. I listened and had no urge to sleep. I was completely enveloped and wrapped into the world of Richard Shephard. I listened for 10 hours straight until I fell asleep. once I woke I finished what was left of the book immediately. I'm itching to read the next installment.

In fact, this is my first review. I had taken a break from audiobooks, however when I saw that Rodney wrote a new book in the wizard scout series, I immediately purchased it. Boy was I not disappointed, the character growth is great and the way everything is fitting together is awesome. I can’t wait for the next one.

loved it. only one small problem
it may sound Petty but. I'm not even kidding. it took over an hour for the implied sexy time to happen. at the start of chapter something-or-other it was implied that sexy time was about to happen, but that sexy time didn't actually happen until another hour after that implication and this makes me mad and I'm not okay with that
