Beautiful descriptive writing..
I have loved Nikki's writing on the Love Story and most recently the Ripping tree I found this one difficult to get through. What I struggled with the most was all the titles which seemed at random to the actual chapters spoken in a very posh English voice as opposed to the easier to listen to Australian accent. They came too often and was quite jarring to the storyline. I'm sure it would be skimmed over in a hardback but so pronounced on audio was irritating. I loved however the actual story of the character coming into herself and the continued timeline with the realness of marriage and motherhood.

Working as a dedicated forensic psychiatrist for many years, Emma is not shocked so easily. Then she is assigned to work with Connie, a wife and mother accused of a despicable crime. Connie is suffering from dissociative amnesia - or at least seems to be. Now it is up to Emma to decide whether Connie can stand trial for her sins. But there is something about Connie that inexorably pulls Emma into her orbit. Too Close is a masterfully written riveting listen about the powerful - yet dangerous - closeness between women.

Tentatively, tenderly, they fall in love. But two people who seem destined to be together can still be torn apart by fear and violence.

Story
A spellbinding story of forbidden love. Three continents, three decades, three very disparate lives: Savitri, intuitive and charismatic, grows up among the servants of a pre-war English household in Madras. But the traditional customs of her Brahmin family clash against English upper-class prejudice, threatening her love for the privileged son of the house.... Nataraj, raised as the son of an idealistic doctor in rural South India, finds life in London heady, with girls and grass easily available.

This new translation of Clarice Lispector's sensational first book tells the story of a middle class woman's life from childhood through an unhappy marriage and its dissolution to transcendence. Near to the Wild Heart, published in Rio de Janeiro in 1943, introduced Brazil to what one writer called "Hurricane Clarice": a 23-year-old girl who wrote her first book in a tiny rented room and then baptized it with a title taken from Joyce.
