A lot had changed in "The Holy Sky" School during the six weeks that Hadjar Darkhan was away. Everyone who was in the capital at the time became much stronger, thanks to the regular skirmishes along the Imperial road. By the emperor's decree, all the disciples of the Imperial martial arts schools were allowed to visit the infamous and highly coveted Wastelands. "The Holy Sky's" disciples were especially fortunate - they'd been given a two-week head start to find the map leading to Emperor Decater's tomb, as well as the key that would allow them to enter his chambers.

Now a student at Wurthaven, Will is confronted with the truth of the present. The powerful magic embodied by wizards like his grandfather is but a distant memory. Though the practice of the current day is timid and uninspired, Will needs the knowledge that’s preserved and managed by the college. At every turn he finds that sorcery is supreme, while wizards are trained merely to assist and support those who hold the real power - a power based on an evil so deep that few who are living know the truth of its foundation.

Publisher's Summary
The riveting tale begun in William Wilde and the Necrosed continues as William finds himself beset on all sides by cruel foes and even crueler friends.
Having survived the monster, Kohl Obsidian, Wiliam Wilde had hoped his life would settle down - that he'd finish his senior year of high school with no further adventures.
But life isn't so simple for a potential magus, especially one who's overcome as deadly an enemy as Kohl. Instead, William has unwittingly earned the raptor gaze of even greater foes. One is someone he thought he could implicitly trust while others are even more dangerous. And all are from the island of Sinskrill. They are mahavans, powerful magic users bent on humanity's enslavement. They seek to capture William and chain him to their needs, to bind him in perpetual servitude upon Sinskrill.
William finds himself caught among people for whom deceit and pain are simple coins to be traded, and his best hope to survive these new challenges might lie with someone he'd always thought to be his mortal enemy.

A dark turn and a good second step for the series.
The plot line for this book was a little darker than the first but it gives a glimpse into how good I hope this series will become. While the first book felt like it bordered on YA fantasy, this second addition to the series loses the high school angst in favor of an overall more mature theme. The character building and depth is excellent. I like that Davis Ashura is taking his time with the characters and not sacrificing depth for an easy feel good moment.
As always Nick Podehl rocks!

Davis Ashura is the new master of short fantasy
In the second book of the William Wilde Chronicles, William & Jake find themselves fighting for their lives after being betrayed and brought to the worst place on Earth: Sinskrill. Here the boys find out just how good they have had it up until now. Everyone lies for their own personal gain and relationships are not built on love but necessity. In the meantime, Jason and his Grandfather are busy planning the rescue of William and Jake. Many new and old characters (YOU KNOW WHO!) are introduced and as always, Nick Podehl is there to keep the imagination at peak performance. Plot lines were never incoherent or difficult to follow. I do believe a glossary will need to to be added to Mr. Ashura's website as spellings and definitions would be a massive help with book 2 going into book 3.
Mr. Ashura said he wrote this for his young teenage kids at the time so this series is Young Adult, but a good deal of the situations are as adult as they come. It was half the normal listening time I am used to for the genre, but I don't mean that in a bad way at all. A total run-time of 9 hours and 25 minutes is all this needed to be smart, creative and suspenseful right up until the last chapter. I expect character development and world building in the fantasy genre today to extend books in the genre into the 700+ pages realm but somehow Davis Asura delivers a perfectly executed mid series book at 356 pages... it really is remarkable. At this point, I have read everything he has published and it is a good indication that I will be reading whatever he creates for years to come.
Book 3 we are all in for a WILDE ride! (see what I did there) Lord **** cometh!
Keep up the great work Davis!

William Wilde book 2
William Wilde has went through a very trying winter vacation with his friends. They were hunted by a terrible monster called the Necrosed. When he got back, he was advised to go Aralin where he could train in safety. William decided that he wants to finish high school and graduate like a normal person before going to Aralin. That was a mistake.
This series is very well done! This entire series is suitable for young adults. There is very little language and nothing that wouldn't be in a PG-13 movie. I am very excited for the next book!
My only complain about this series is the names of the magic. They all sound very similar with the suffix of Ossra. Still, this is a very minor complain that does not take away from the series.

Life events are mostly controlled by others.
Sometimes that is for better, sometimes it's for worse. Family and friends can be foes. Who knows? Enemies can certainly friends. Who can tell? when magic mixes with history and future events, nothing is as it seems. The horrible may be helpful and the good may be good luck. Or not. Kidnapping puts an end to the kids and new friends tries trust to the limits. Secrets change reality and escape is a risky impossibility. One if by land, two if by sea. But when there are four, it's more for me!

Better than the first
This book was half way decent, being the second installment in the series. The pacing was still inconsistent, tending to be very slow in places, but the author is getting better at it. I think largely, he doesn't know what to write about in order to further the story. Also, I feel like the author doesn't entirely play by the rules he's made in this story he's written. I will read the third book, though I'm still not sure about the series. I finally figured out, for the most part, the words the author uses for magic and mages and gates and such, but they are still very tedious and redundant. All told, I dont understand the point to being a mage, but the characters are interesting and likeable.
