An ENTHRALLING new novel from the NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING author of Migrations and Once There Were Wolves

"The ensemble narration brings this intense story to life.”—AudioFile

"A WILDLY TALENTED writer."―Emily St. John Mandel

A family on a remote island. A mysterious woman washed ashore. A rising storm on the horizon.

Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world’s largest seed bank, Shearwater was once full of researchers, but with sea levels rising, the Salts are now its final inhabitants. Until, during the worst storm the island has ever seen, a woman mysteriously washes ashore.

Isolation has taken its toll on the Salts, but as they nurse the woman, Rowan, back to strength, it begins to feel like she might just be what they need. Rowan, long accustomed to protecting herself, starts imagining a future where she could belong to someone again.

But Rowan isn’t telling the whole truth about why she set out for Shearwater. And when she discovers sabotaged radios and a freshly dug grave, she realizes Dominic is keeping his own secrets. As the storms on Shearwater gather force, they all must decide if they can trust each other enough to protect the precious seeds in their care before it’s too late—and if they can finally put the tragedies of the past behind them to create something new, together.

A novel of breathtaking twists, dizzying beauty, and ferocious love, Wild Dark Shore is about the impossible choices we make to protect the people we love, even as the world around us disappears.

Editorial Review

Sub-Antarctic noir meets a love letter to the natural world
Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of a remote island near Antarctica, home to the Shearwater research base and the world’s largest seed bank. Rising seas have been threatening the island, so the family must prepare to evacuate. When a woman named Rowan washes up on shore, the Salts take her in and nurse her back to health. As Rowan recovers, she gets to know the family: Raff, Dominic’s oldest son, is doing his best to channel his grief and rage from tragic heartbreak; Fen, his 17-year-old sister, is such a water creature that she lives among the seals; and Orly, the youngest boy, is consumed with love for the natural world. The storytelling moves through each character’s perspective, voiced by a stellar cast of narrators: Cooper Mortlock, Katherine Littrell, Saskia Maarleveld, and Steve West. It’s an immersive, moody listen that left me in tears in the best way possible. —Tricia F., Audible Editor

The first 100 pages was gripping and excellent. The second 100 pages of the book dragged on painfully with each page. I was disappointed with the strong language and a couple explicit sex scenes that were cringe worthy.

The storyline was a little too dramatic and it gave me a disgusted feeling at times. Too much happening in ONE book. The author bombarded the reader with a Kristin Hannah Drama, all crammed into the last 60 pages.

I would have enjoyed the book more had the heterosexual sex scene been closed door, the author removed at least 50 pages of BLA, and she cut at least three dramatic focal points. Too many in one book. Steve West's voice was the only reason I made it to the end. Thank God for dreamy audio readers(side note: The Scorpio Races is another book he reads and it's EXCELLENT).

If you like excessive drama with all the characters in the storyline, then you will like this book. If you like Kristin Hannah, then you will probably love this book.

Beyond the mystery at it’s heart, this stunning novel is an examination of the enduring nature of love, and the compulsion to save what is precious to us. And the extraordinary setting is a character all its own. Bravo!

Beautiful, sad, haunting

Absolutely loved this story. Perfectly mysterious and the plot pulls you in throughout the whole book. I don’t know how the author has you fall in love with all of the characters but that was impressive!
