Publisher's Summary

Two schools - both in leafy Larkshire, but worlds apart. The incomparable Jilly Cooper turns her brilliant pen to the explosive world of education.

At Bagley Hall, a notoriously wild, but increasingly academic, independent, crammed with the children of the famous, trouble is afoot. The ambitious and fatally attractive headmaster, Hengist Brett-Taylor, hatches a plan to share the facilities of his school with Larkminster Comprehensive - known locally, as 'Larks'. His reasons for doing so are purely financial, but he is encouraged by the opportunities the scheme gives him for frequent meetings with Janna Curtis, the dynamic new head of Larks, who has been drafted in to save what is a fast-sinking school from closure. Janna is young, pretty, enthusiastic and vastly brave - and she will do anything to rescue her demoralised, run-down and cash-strapped school.

Neither parents nor staff of either school are too keen on this radical move, although some can see the possible financial advantages. For the students, however, it offers great opportunities to get up to even more mayhem than usual.

Critic Reviews

"My reading of Jilly Cooper's Wicked! was not guiltily pleasurable - it was just pleasurable...a brilliantly refreshing read." (Polly Vernon, Observer)

I am no prude but this is all about under age sex

I love Jilly Coopers Rutshire Chronicles to date but this one was a step too far. Headmistress kissing pupil and staff bonking young and old alike with absolutely no moral compass. Rape even shrugged off. Sorry i have abandoned midway as cant take it.

In very poor taste

I used to like a Jilly Cooper for a light, fun read with characters you hate & end up liking. This could have been a good read but it just isn’t. There is far too much unnecessary gratuitous sexual violence which is meaningless and adds nothing to the story. I wonder what kind of people the author knows to consider that kids of 12/13 have adult-type sexual encounters mixed in with school work and walking the dog. I am most definitely not a prude but don’t see how anyone can enjoy reading supposedly strong female characters being treated as sexual disposable pawns alongside men portrayed as mysogenistic, chauvinists who end up smelling of roses. The baseless racism and homophobia are cringeworthy and the attempts to show that comprehensive kids from sink estates can ‘come good’ are downright offensive. There could have been a heartwarming story showing the reality of lives at both ends of the scale but the author chose to make a mockery of it. This book was not written in the dark ages but it reads like it was - undermining women on every level. Will never read a Jilly Cooper again.

Narration not the best

The narrator was so bad at The young people's voices.. Particularly the use of the word 'man' from the larks kids.. So out of touch with youth culture. It was cringe. Story good.

Excellent characters

Having read all of the Rutshire Chronicles, I loved this book.
Jilly never fails to entertain, I am never ready for her books to end.
Sherry Baines is a very talented narrator! She really brings the characters to life and her capacity for vocal change and accents is outstanding. On to the next....

Almost As Good as Polo

The reviews I read led me to expect this to be a dud but I loved this book, as brilliant as her classics. Well worth it yet again.

Some things don't date..

...well, not really! There's everything you might expect from Jilly in this one - though schools are a bit of a departure - and probably quite a bit more. There's even a little bit about horses...

Fantastic

A fantastic story. Fun characters. Love having the Campbell Blacks back. The Larks school children are great.
