A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Absolutely gripping.” —The Washington Post • “A masterpiece of oral history…stirring, surprising, grim, joyous, moving, and always riveting.” —Evan Thomas

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Only Plane in the Sky and Pulitzer Prize finalist for Watergate comes the most complete and up-to-date account of D-Day—the largest seaborne invasion in history and the moment that secured the Allied victory in World War II—featuring hundreds of eyewitness accounts.

June 6, 1944—known to us all as D-Day—is one of history’s greatest and most unbelievable military triumphs. The surprise sunrise landing of more than 150,000 Allied troops on the beaches of occupied northern France is one of the most consequential days of the 20th century. Now, Pulitzer Prize finalist Garrett M. Graff, historian and author of The Only Plane in the Sky and Watergate, brings them all together in a one-of-a-kind, bestselling oral history that explores this seminal event in vivid, heart-pounding detail.

The story begins in the opening months of the 1940s, as the Germany army tightens its grip across Europe, seizing control of entire nations. The United States, who has resolved to remain neutral, is forced to enter the conflict after an unexpected attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. For the second time in fifty years, the world is at war, with the stakes higher than they’ve ever been before. Then in 1943, Allied leaders Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill meet in Casablanca to discuss a new plan for victory: a coordinated invasion of occupied France, led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Failure is not an option. Over the next eighteen months, the large-scale action is organized, mobilizing soldiers across Europe by land, sea, and sky. And when the day comes, it is unlike anything the world has ever seen.

These moments and more are seen in real time. A visceral, page-turning drama told through the eyes of those who experienced them—from soldiers, nurses, pilots, children, neighbors, sailors, politicians, volunteers, photographers, reporters and so many more, When the Sea Came Alive “is the sort of book that is smart, inspiring, and powerful—and adds so much to our knowledge of what that day was like and its historic importance forever” (Chris Bohjalian)—an unforgettable, fitting tribute to the men and women of the Greatest Generation.

Editorial Review

Eight decades later, the voices of D-Day live on
It’s June 6, 1944, and along the beaches of Normandy, one of the most significant operations in military history is underway: Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France, and the beginning of the milestone campaign that would propel the Allies to victory in World War II. In When the Sea Came Alive, journalist Garrett M. Graff ventures to craft a comprehensive, compassionate portrait of the momentous event now known simply as “D-Day.” Graff curated the accounts of hundreds of folks intimately involved, from those who planned the assault, to those whose boots tread through the sand, to the French civilians who watched it all unfold. I’m really looking forward to hearing this one—like Graff’s Audie-winning The Only Plane in the Sky, this oral history is performed by a full cast including the author and decorated narrator Edoardo Ballerini, promising a chronicle that truly shines in audio.. — Alanna M., Audible Editor

This book is a long listen, but it is well researched, written, and performed. It is one of the best audiobooks, with testimonials from all ranks— from Churchill and Roosevelt to the average German and American soldier - with authentic-sounding actors providing an oral history of D-Day.

This is the first book I have listened to that involved the voices of many actors. I found this quite interesting. Also, I enjoyed the broader coverage of all five landing beaches and intense firefights for bridges and other strategic locations.

Personal, Thorough, Riveting

I have never read a book based on pov style of personal recollections. took a while to get used to individual statements of a sentence or less. this was especially distracting in the first portion of the book building up to D-Day. however once the attack started this style became very interesting. especially hearing same event described form multiple perspectives. my favorite part was the chapter describing people's reactions to hearing news of the invasion

Amazing perspectives

If you are a history buff, or if your grandfather served in WWII or if you simply want to learn, then this is the book for you. No one book can tell each individual's story of his experience on that longest day. However, if you want to learn through the story of men who were there, this is the audiobook for you. If you've got a long drive ahead, this book will keep you company. I highly recommend Mr. Graff's book.
