Publisher's summary

"Narrator Avi Roque delivers a perfectly paced performance....seamlessly switching between English, Scottish, and American accents to distinguish the variety of characters."—AudioFile on What Moves the Dead, an Earphones Award winner

The follow-up to T. Kingfisher’s bestselling gothic novella, What Moves the Dead.

Retired soldier, Alex Easton, returns in a horrifying new adventure.

After their terrifying ordeal at the Usher manor, Alex Easton feels as if they just survived another war. All they crave is rest, routine, and sunshine, but instead, as a favor to Angus and Miss Potter, they find themself heading to their family hunting lodge, deep in the cold, damp forests of their home country, Gallacia.

In theory, one can find relaxation in even the coldest and dampest of Gallacian autumns, but when Easton arrives, they find the caretaker dead, the lodge in disarray, and the grounds troubled by a strange, uncanny silence. The villagers whisper that a breath-stealing monster from folklore has taken up residence in Easton’s home. Easton knows better than to put too much stock in local superstitions, but they can tell that something is not quite right in their home. . . or in their dreams.

Lovely and Creepy

Worried it wasn’t going to be as exciting as the first book but did not disappoint. I love that this story focused on a folk monster you don’t hear much about. The author is very good at using small details to give you that creeped out feeling.
Highly recommend this series to those who enjoy horror and some historical fiction.

I love the narrators voice. Perfect for the character and the overall feeling of book. I really enjoy this series and hopefully can look forward to another!

The sophomore that's just as good as the first time

I love Kingfisher and the Sworn Soldier books and this one was as gripping as the first. Easton is such a delightful narrator and spending more time with kan a pleasure. If you like a spooky horror with little gore, Sworn Soldier books will do you right.

Unsettling, in a good way.

The story is well-crafted, and suitably eerie for the genre. Without giving too much of a spoiler, I will say it may be particularly uncomfortable in parts to those of us suffering asthma. Well worth your time.

Love the narrator. Love the style. Fast and fun listen.

T. Kingfisher’s stuff that I’ve read (this, what moves the dead, and a house with good bones) have been quick easy listens that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. They are creepy and funny and clever.

Story is great, narrator is AWFUL

While this book is short, the story is amazing. Unfortunately, yet again, the narrator makes it absolutely unlistenable. Their pronunciation and over articulation is like Frances McDormand, Dora the Explorer, and Miss Rachel combined. I'm only an hour and a half in and I can't force myself to power through this one and normally I devour books like this. It's a shame about the narrator. Hopefully I'll grab a physical copy of the book and read it eventually.

A worthy successor

A worthy follow up to What Moves the Dead. While I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first, I still thought it was worth reading. The characters were lovable and reasonable, which makes them fun to follow. I also enjoyed the culture created within the book. Elements of the horror from the first book were present here, but this is definitely its own story. I am hoping for a third book in this series!

pretty good spooky story

good gothic vibes, pretty well written, a little bare (needed a bit more meat on it's bones) and a not very satisfying conclusion.

Almost as Good as the First

This book was almost as good as the first, but I think that the supernatural cause to all of the events hit a little different. Still a great book and the return of Easton, Angus, and Miss Potter was a joy.
