Publisher's summary

Seeking balance. Loved ones at risk. No more Mr. Nice Guy.

Gus is doing his best to deal with Mengele’s sabotage. If that was all that was required of him, he would be able to sleep peacefully at night. But trying to lead his new team, while saving the people that matter to them, is testing even his incredible abilities.

The threat to his crew grows stronger as he wrestles against unrelenting, impossible odds. In order to meet them head-on, Gus needs to temper his growing powers…or they will consume him.

As he balances on the tipping point of a new future for mankind, the super can only hope the weight of the world doesn’t crush him.

Good continuation of the series

I enjoyed the book, it picks up the storyline from the last book and moves the arc forward. This one was not quite as captivating as the first two but still good

These books are fun, intelligent, creative, and witty. Stubblefield is such an engaging writer and this narrator is amazing!

Top notch writing!

The author's character development was top notch. It was so good that I felt uncomfortable when the MC was making mistakes because the writing made it resonate. The interactions between characters was excellent.

There was a part of this novel that felt like a transition to bigger things. I am really interested in the future of the cultivation part of the novel. I will definitely purchase the next one.

Travis Baldree did a brilliant job with the narration once again!

A bit of a letdown

Carl Stubblefield writing style is still quite good but, unfortunately, his decision to have Gus wallow in his leadership shortcomings and continued losses like some pitiable failureMeister for most of the novel was a listener downer. It does appear that the author meant this book to be the one where the MC finally finds his groove but by that time, I had lost too much interest in the book and, perhaps, the series.

Travis Baldree's performance was excellent and the motivating influence that allowed me to finish the book.

suddenly cultivation

And suddenly there's cultivation aspects out of nowhere...
Feels like this series can't figure out what it wants to be...

Still well written, but I think this is the last book for me with the many shifts in focus...

Travis needs a raise :)

Started out well enough, but..

The story itself is fairly interesting and decently paced. However, the MC and multiple side characters (Aurora and Harmony, mostly) are written in the most obnoxious way possible. The MC is astoundingly naive and often just stupid. I thought this was something that he would grow out of as it was a major obstacle in the second and third books, but he still loses his mind at the sight of attractive women and swings from wanting to reason with people who are actively stealing from him one moment, and flat out kill people in the name of justice the next. Aurora actively contradicts herself, lashes out at team members, and never suffers any repercussions for any argument she starts or horrible decisions she forces into existence. The entire Harmony "arc" is just...awful. Truly a cringe-worthy series of chapters that results in no character development and simply uses plot armor as a conflict resolution in a manner similar to launching a car into space as in Fast and Furious 9. Any promise the previous books had created is well and truly dead.
