Publisher's Summary
The first book in the best-selling series that has garnered over a million fans across the globe. Retired homicide detective Thomas Prescott is reluctant to read the bestselling true-crime thriller, Eight in October. After all, it was his case, and he doesn’t need to be reminded of the gruesome details. The book dubbed the serial killer, Tristen Grayer, The MAINEiac. Grayer is allegedly dead, but only Prescott knows the truth: Grayer is alive and lurking in the shadows. On October 1st, the anniversary of the first murder, The MAINEiac resurfaces, killing someone special from Prescott’s past. Suddenly, it’s déjà vu for Prescott, except this time the women closest to him begin to fall victim. With the help of his former flame, Bangor chief medical examiner, Dr. Caitlin Dodds, Prescott must race against the clock to stop Grayer from completing his encore.

Unexpected find!
Unforeseen was actually a pretty good book. The protagonist is Thomas Prescott. He works as a consultant for the FBI. While most of the state of Maine believes he killed a serial killer the previous year Prescott thinks it was someone else. By the time he convinces anyone it's too late because the killer is killing again.
This is story has a great plot. Interesting characters and is very suspenseful. It also full of lots of slice 'em and dice 'em scenes that many may (or may not find objectionable). Plenty of sarcasm, sometimes inappropriate. I personally didn't mind, it's fiction... there's not much that bothers me in a made up story.
Johnny Heller's delivery is spot on! This is a narrator I wish did more.
RECOMMENDED with some hesitation for some listeners

Do Not Waste Your Time
i gave this a 1 because it was free audible as part of my membership. I was hoping to discover a new series and author.
First, i had to look up when this book was written... i was trying to give the sexist narrative (excessive commentary on women’s bodies, etc,), a break, but it was written in 2004. No excuse.
“Men hate when women come into their house and act like they own the place. Women on the other hand view it as a smidgen below a marriage proposal. i had the distinct impression Caitlin’s overies were huddledI together in her fallopian tube watching my every move like an episode of Sex in the City”
Yuck.
i wanted to like the main character but he was a characture of other “detectives” who did it better. He WASN’T charming, or funny, just cringe worthy. The character has different names for his penis, “cute” ways to describe sex as well as women’s body parts, & used excessive ridiculous “witticisms”, He wanted to be Spenser, instead he was Andrew Dice Clay.
i thought it was a good premise, ruined by bad writing. Also a bad ending. The “twist” was convoluted and unbelievable.
Also I HATE when bad things happen because a character can’t be bothered to tell other characters important information.

Brutal, violent, misogynistic, but not a bad plot
The story was reasonably well crafted, and the narrator did a good job, but there were some major story/character issues. First, this was perhaps the most brutal and gory set of crimes I’ve ever read about. If you are sensitive to that sort of thing then give this one a miss. Second, the main character- a self-described “prick” - was extremely misogynistic. The way he talked about, thought about and treated women was degrading and graphic. Not cool.
I do have one critique for the narrator as well: he did not do a Washington State accent (the protagonist was born and raised in Washington). The accent definitely contributed to the narrator coming off as a dirty old man.

One liners......
One liner almost every sentence . Protagonist is supposed to be a tough , rugged, handsome murder detective but has the sense of humor of a 60+ year old upper middle class man ( golf jokes, jokes that matlock or murder she wrote would like). Just didn’t fit for me. Good description of murder scenes , but the fat pug and all the women wanting this guy just wasn’t right

Nick Pirog is finally available in audio!
UNFORESEEN was a beach listen for me in July. I'm not going to add to the publisher's summary. Instead, I'd like to discuss author Nick Pirog. Pirog is one of the most successful of the early adapters to independent ebook publishing. He has been famous in the ebook world for several years. His books are offbeat and very clever. I'm delighted that he is now joining the audio world. As is usual for him Johnny Heller does a great job of narrating.

This is such an adolescent guy’s book
There are many male authors in this genre I like, but this one was so adolescent male it was ridiculous - actually laughed about it.
Our hero, Thomas, is a good-looking, cocky, smart-ass, beer & bourbon swilling lone-ranger type. He thinks, and we read frequently about hard-ons, penis length, nipples, asses, legs and etc., ad nauseam; not to mention the “fun” nicknames he has for his own penis and erections. We don’t, thank god, get the play by play on the sex - I can’t help but think that would’ve read like a male 15 year-olds wet dream.
This guy’s head is turned by a hot babe, to the extent when he should have his eye on the ball in terms of the case, he’s busy getting laid. And, of course, the highly accomplished women of the story are hot babes who want him!
Also, we’re supposed to think Thomas is some kind of great detective, and I can’t really figure out why. Two of the three major “aha” moments are courtesy of his student, not him. And, in the end, it is his sister who saves the day, not him. I can’t figure out why I’m supposed to like this guy. Not only is he an adolescent twit masquerading as a macho dude, he’s not even a good detective.
So read this only if you cannot pass up the chance to read something about a penis in every chapter.
The narrator was good.

Totally spoiled by ugly misogyny. Very old-fashioned.
I would’ve enjoyed this fast-paced crime story if it hadn’t been for the terrible misogyny of the protagonist. Ruined it. There is no excuse for implying such behaviour is fine by making it a large part of the central character’s personality. It jars, it’s lazy, it’s unrealistic, it’s poor writing and it’s very old-fashioned. Gross.

If you were raised by fairies......
I really enjoyed this book(& the entire series). I was a little hesitant after reading some reviews, however, so glad I went with my gut on this. Great characters. Great stories. Lots of laughs. If you were, for whatever reason, raised by fictitious fairies and are offended by just about everything and think the world should rotate around a ridiculous politically correct agenda, then this series isn't for you. If you are like me and laugh rather than get offended by things, buckle up and enjoy!!!
