A young detective investigating crimes of the uncanny will learn that bargains can change your fate—for good or ill—in this darkly enthralling fantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of the Others and the Black Jewels series.

Words have power. Intentions matter.

Most people come to Destiny Park for entertainment. They come to have their cards read to tell them a bit about their future. They come to walk through a beautiful park and to eat at the hotel’s restaurant. They come in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Arcana, the paranormal beings who rule the Isle of Wyrd.

But some people come to make a bargain with the Arcana—to change their fate. And some people come for dark purposes.

When Detective Beth Fahey is sent to Destiny Park to inquire about a “ghost gun,” she will begin a strange journey on which she must learn to navigate the Arcana’s unforgiving laws and dangerous attractions. Her search will draw her into seemingly impossible cases and the secrets of her own past as tensions rise between the Arcana and their human neighbors across the river.

For the Isle of Wyrd is a place where the dead ride trains to their final destinations, predators literally become prey, and seekers’ true natures are revealed in the ripples of destiny unknowingly stirred in their wakes.

Who will live? Who will die? And who will be lost in between?

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Bishop’s series opener is a story of fate, truth, and consequences, compelling in its description of a world where humans are not in charge yet still have the hubris to believe they are, and where the wild, the weird, and the wonderful are forces that demand obedience and responsibility, as seen through the eyes of a determined investigator who can see both sides of a seemingly insurmountable divide. . . . Highly recommended for lovers of dark fantasy and weird urban fantasy, especially fans of Bishop’s “World of the Others” series.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“An entertaining and sometimes brutal tale of magic, mystery, and mischief.”—Publishers Weekly

“Bishop's series starter is a satisfying tale of consequences and bargains, both for good and ill, with a central character who works through difficult changes and ultimately lands on her feet.”—Booklist

“After finishing Turns of Fate, I've moved from an interested reader to a fan. While there is still a lot of mystery around Wyrd and its inhabitants, Turns of Fate puts a lot of pieces in play to allow those mysteries to be explored in future books, and I'm here for it."—Game Vortex

This is a complely new storyline set in a sidestep of modern life- but similar enough to the Others universe that it is easy to imagine that they are coins in the same bag. Anne's books do not shy away from the dark side of your imagination, but so far most of the horror is in "the thought of it" and not so much described... which I appreciated. A fast, can't put it down read.

A new and wonderously Weird World

Magical and slightly spooky Anne Bishop is a master storyteller. Her tales are haunting in the best of ways. The characters are always believable in alternate reality settings.I will be reading this again and again;a new favorite. If you liked ms. Bishop’s the “others” novels you will truly enjoy this novel . Buy it now!

Possible Spoilers:
Detective Beth Fahey has joined the Penwych Police Force’s Special Investigations Team. There are 6 towns on the banks of the Fate River, in the center of which is the Isle of Wyrd, where there exists a ’Convergence of the Uncanny’. The humans on shore can take the ferry to Destiny Park for a card reading to answer their questions, or desperate requests. The Arcane who live on & in Wyrd believe in free will and intention. Words have power. Intentions matter. Everyone chooses their fate.
This story reminds me most of Bishop’s ‘Others’ series with Humans at odds with different races. They want what they can benefit from the Wyrd, but then want to blame them for their own choices.
Vilinsky’s voice was good for this narration. She fit the FMC. But she needs serious work on voicing different characters. At minimum, at least get some differentiation between male or female.

Interesting

Was expecting some of the romance from her other books. A little bit disappointed there wasn’t any romance here.

Love her mythological creatures and their abilities.

I love all of Anne Bishop’s books, and this one is just as excellent as the rest. Her writing is truly unique, and I haven’t found anything quite like it elsewhere. I’m already looking forward to the next books in the series. If anyone has recommendations for authors with a similar writing style, I’d love to hear them.

An amazing book with beautiful, unique writing that stays with you long after you finish it
