Engrossing, addictive mystery

Fabulous creation by Diaz, well-read. Begins with Henry Jamesian / Gatsby glamour, telling the story of a 1920s millionaire's wife, then turns into mystery about what we have just read. Did not see the ending coming, though all the clues are there so it is satisfying.

Themes of capitalism, language, music, the flaws of technology, the flaws of romanticism. One of Diaz's inspirations may have been the life of Lucia Joyce, daughter of James Joyce, as there are certainly some parallels (not a spoiler).

Expectations where high

Didn’t live up to my expectations at all. The story is flat - but it’s dotted with facts (not sure what is true or not) but it doesn’t always help to progress the story.

Interesting, but kinda dull

As much as I appreciated the construction of and ideas in this book, the actual reading experience of it was not very enjoyable. I found myself bored more than anything.

Beautiful writing, slow unfolding plot

sophisticated writing so well worth the read. Well done turns in the plot. Slow moving, at first.

Solid time

Had some great themes. I do with the editor was a bit more aggressive. There are som I dead introduced that sort of Peter out. Overall really enjoyed the way they all ultimately fit together. I did think the narration for the final section was *dreadful* like the tried a hipster computer software to make her voice sound grail. It was distracting als
