Trial and Retribution

I am really enjoying this author's writing, the murders are thrilling and the characters are excellent. The narration is very good. Will be looking out for more books.

Addicted

Lynda La Plante’s books have become my new favorite. Don’t think you necessarily have to read them in any certain order. This book has a good twist at the end.

Trial and retribution

I really enjoyed this kidnapping, murder audio book. It is a sad subject, but the characters were colorful and not very likeable, except for one of the attorneys.

Amazing descriptions

This novel feels like a harsh dose of reality. It’s one of those rare novels that can mimic real life in such a way it makes me a little uncomfortable. I think La Plante has an exceptional gift for description. I’m really impressed by her skill.
The story is decent and very heartbreaking. It zigged and zagged and the end actually surprised me.

Please read below

I'm going to do a review for the series as a whole and post it for each book, this is because I feel that the further along the series and especially the last book are mostly about the private lives of the detectives rather than the crimes themselves.

I do feel that of all the series of Linda La Plante's that I've read/watched this is probably the weakest as far as story and character development go.

The character of Mike Walker is not someone I like, yes he may get the job done, but he really is a dinosaur, and frankly I don't think he is that good of a detective. He guesses a lot or plays a hunch, which by luck has been proved correct, so often no more follow up is done once a case has either had a confession or thought to be proved. Finding evidence whilst the case is going through trial seems really far fetched to me and also not professional.

The character of Pat North has a lot of potential, she should have stayed well away from getting involved in a relationship with Mike Walker, and frankly that whole scenario is completely unnecessary.

The Detective Sargent character of Dave Satchwell starts off predictable, seems to move forward, and then de-evolves by the last book.

How much of all of this is due to the fact that the author was writing for television, rather than writing a "book" I don't know, but the story does seem to suffer because of it.

I won't be revisiting the tv series, and I doubt very much that I will listen to the books again.

Great book

loved it, good pace and accurate accents by the narrator. Kept you wondering about the suspect's guilt or not until the end.

Really good performance

The narrater was excellent in my opinion and made every character come alive. He has made it difficult to listen to anyone else.

Engaging audible

Thoroughly enjoyed this as it works well as an audible book. It’s very engaging plus I also really like the narrator which is always important. I particularly liked him doing the female voices.

Very disappointing

I need to identify with at least one character and I didn’t have any feelings about anyone. I usually enjoy her books but I felt this one was a waste of time.

Depressing

I listen to a lot of crime fiction but did not enjoy this at all. There is no respite from a horrific and depressing story from start to finish. Every single thing that happens to every single character, even minor ones, is sad. I feel drained by it. The narrator was excellent however.

Didn't quite meet expectations, still recommended

I guess the bar was high, following not just Jane Tennison but also the TV series, with Kate Buffery outstanding as Pat North.
I almost lost interest halfway as the the plot of the murdered child seemed to founder in familar cliches of stepfather etc.
But I persisted and glad I did as it did transcend mere cliche.
When I read Lynda la Plante I must admit to a positive bias based on Tara Moss's interviews, which really do highlight Lynda's multi-media skills! Hence the expectations! Books nowadays very much have an increasingly multi-media context.

Great book.

Enjoyed this book an easy listen, although was unsure at the start because, I always enjoyed the TV series. Found the book as good as the TV series. Storyline was good and enjoyed the narration.

The best crime story I’ve listened to

Very thrilling and engrossing story which kept you guessing until the end. Well done narrated. Highly recommend
