Publisher's summary

If you enjoyed The Glass Castle, then you’ll love this captivating and heartfelt story of a girl's triumph over childhood trauma and poverty.

Some seemingly preordained lives end up elsewhere entirely when a person manages to break the mold. Mary's mold was broken from the outside. When the unthinkable happened in her traditional southern family, Mary's quiet childhood was transformed into a journey of discovery amidst the world around her and of all the potential that lay within her.

Soon after her father, a beloved preacher in her close-knit Tennessee community, came out as a gay man at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Mary's mother, feeling betrayed and unable to deal with this new reality, embarked Mary and her siblings on a years-long cross-country odyssey - which would eventually land them in California - through New York, Nevada, and many other places.

Mary, a sweet, innocent, and precocious child at the beginning of this adventure, had little idea of the transformation she was about to undergo. She would emerge stronger, wiser, and much better prepared for all that awaited her in life, from those travels through aqua, green, and blue....

Fascinating. Captivating. Inspiring

This is an amazing story of struggle, determination, and perseverance. Each chapter pulled me in more and more, and I was excited to hear how her tale ended. The things she had overcome, at such a young age, and in a far less kind era, would have devastating for most children. Excellent read.

This was the first non-fiction book I have listened too and I am so glad I did. The emotional journey Mary has you go through with her is one that will help you reflect on your own life and journey. It has given me new insights in living with cleft pallet and living at the rock bottom and yet achieving. I may never be as strong, loving and forgiving as Mary is but after reading this book I can strive to be. The narrator does a great job of keeping the feeling and flow of the story. This is one to listen to and recommend to others who have lived with struggles and fears. Thank you Mary for telling your story. And thank you for making it through.
